D3 patch 1.4 problem installing
|

| Back into Descent after a number of years, still nothing like it.
Problem -- I'm using XP for Descent 3 Sol Ascent. I downloaded the patch
1.4, but when the installer asks for the folder and I point it to it, I get
the following:
"Patch Error"
"Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update
done since file contents do not match."
Is Sol Ascent different from regular D3? Anybody had a similar experience?

Take from my page:
---
For those who don't know yet: Descent 3 Sol Ascent is a 5-level OEM
version (i.e. commercial, no demo) of the upcoming Descent 3 retail. It
features levels 1-5 of the retail version whereas level 1: DEIMOS is
also available for download as D3 demo 2 and level 2: PICCU STATION
which is Descent 3 demo 1. Sol Ascent also covers the mupltiplayer
levels of both D3 demos: Taurus, The Core, Polaris. Unfortunately this
OEM-version *only* runs on a Voodoo 3 (and on no other card!!) and it's
bundled with the V3 3000 so don't take the V3 2000 if you can't wait to
play those levels. AFAIK there's been no registry hack or whatever out
yet to make it run on at least Voodoo2 but even if you'd manage to do it
you'd be violating the copyright so do NOT mail me about any hacks!
If you're crazy like me and buy the Voodoo3 only to play those 5 levels
before the official release date be warned: the levels rock but the game
is still buggy as hell. I experienced several lockups and even now after
having reinstalled Win95C and with it the Voodoo drivers, Sol Ascent
etc. I cannot use my old D3 Sol save games nor view my demos! I've
mailed Outrage about it but haven't gotten any reply so far and I don't
think they will answer as D3 retail is finished and scheduled for
release on June the 16th.
---
IOW: you cannot patch it but you gotta buy D3 retail. Should be no
problem to get it on the net somehwere. There are several bundles out
there.

As last resort there would be abandonware channels on IRC or doesn't D3
qualify just yet?

i have seen some D3 up at eBay and quite easy to get them. Some of them are
still new brand - still sealed in plastic cover.
