Game similar to Descent ?
|
|
|
| Hello friends,
I'm not much of the gammer, but I did get hooked on Descent.
Can anybody recommend a game similar to Descent (360/fly)?
Thanks,

If you want more levels, go to ftp://ftp.pooterman.com

At the risk of people hitting me with foam bats, Forsaken.

Heh! I like the aluminum myself: nice crisp "DING" when it bounces off the
head!
Forsaken indeed!

Few people are aware of another Descent clone called Radix: Beyond the
Void. It had a 2.5D engine and as I recall had improved framerates compared
to Descent2 at the time.
You flew through tunnels with descent-like weapons, and well, that's
enough to get you started. You can try the shareware at
http://www.3dgamers.com/games/radix/
If anyone has a copy of this or a warez link, I'd be interested as a
collector.

Hmmm, and what about that thing called Freespace?

I don't know if anything interesting has been released in the last year
but summing-up from similar questions in this group from 2001 & 2002 we
get (and repeating some of the other answers):
A) Completely similar, 360-degrees rotation, maze-flying games:
A0a) (1994) Descent {Parallax Software} (DOS ? | MacOS)
A0b) (1996) Descent II {Parallax Software} (DOS 5.0|Windows 4.x | MacOS)
A1) (1997) Terracide {Simis} (Direct3D(DirectX 5), Glide)
Demo (1997-09-25) (11.4 MB)
A2) (1998) Forsaken {Probe Ent.} (Direct3D(DirectX 5))
Demo (1998-07-22) (17.9 MB)
<news:alt.games.forsaken> (even lower volume then a.g.d)
A3) (1999) Descent III {Outrage Ent.} (Direct3D(DirectX ?), OpenGL)
B) Suggestions for "similar feeling" games that Descenters might like:
(a 2.5 Dimension style game)
B1) (1995) Radix: Beyond the Void {Neural Storm Ent.} (DOS)
(an advanced helicopter-like vehicle)
B2) (1997) G-Police {Psygnosis} (Direct3D(DirectX ?)
(a Descent-like ship in tunnels, but you can't fly upside-down)
B3) (1998) Adrenix {Digital Dialects} (Direct3D(DirectX ?))
Demo (1998-01-20) (13.7 MB)
(a helicopter vehicle)
B4) (1999) Lander {Psygnosis} (Direct3D(DirectX ?)
(a futuristic submarine game)
B5a) (2001) Aquanox {Massive Development} (D3D(DirectX ?),OpenGL, Glide)
B5b) (2002) Aquanox 2: Revelation {Massive Dev.} (D3D(DirectX ?),OpenGL)
(And maybe the FreeSpace games should be in the list also?)

It's not really a Descent game; it was called Descent: Freespace in the
US, apparently to benefit from the Descent franchise. The Freespace
series are normal - but nonetheless good - space opera games a la TIE
Fighter, Starlancer (which I actually believe to be a mediocre attempt
to clone Freespace) etc. The only thing it really has in common with
Descent is the name and some of the developers behind it.
The Non-US title of Freespace was actually "Conflict: Freespace" instead
of "Descent: Freespace".
Hope this helps,
Florian

The types of games in the list involve "six-degrees" of movement (or
close enough to). The FreeSpace games cut down on lateral and
vertical movement leaving only four degrees, resulting in a different
feel for the game than Descent.
FreeSpace would feel more like a flight-sim such as Red Baron, Crimson
Skies, Wing Commander, etc. It wouldn't capture the same feeling
Descent-style games provide, thus you might want to add it into
another section if you do.

Ok, that was someone elses suggestion to the the OP. The "six-degrees"
freedom of movement (or almost) games would be the "A"-list.
You can't swim/fly upside-down in the submarine and helicopter games
either i think. But i played around a little more with the Adrenix Demo
since yesterday and i was wrong. You can do a 360-degree loop front to
back but not a 360 degree rolling sideways, so i feel it should have
been placed on the "A"-list.
Except for the 2 AquaNox Demo's they are all small enough so that most
anyone can DL them and make up their own minds.

Because Descent did not sell too well in Europe, we must be out of our
minds...

Thanks to all who did reply. I'm in process of testing all
suggested games
Currently my favorite (most D3-like) is Forsaken. I would
like to buy this game (I guess by now it should cost around
$10 or so). Googled around but couldn't find it. Does anybody
know some online store where I can buy it? (Would prefer to
pay-and-download).
The suggestion to get more levels is also good (duno why I
didn't think about it myself). I used to use in the past a
program DETLEF32. I have DW the latest version, but all the
sites the program tries to contact are unreachable - I guess
the list is old, and sites are gone, or changed their URL.
Does anybody use this progy for missions? How? This is not
a big problem, one can always just search for levels...
The only other game I liked, and bought was Quake. Q1, Q2
were ok, But I personally didn't like Q3. True, I usually
play with myself - but still I don't get it, just run
and shut everything. One thing about the Quake3, the
graphic is SUPER!
Finally, one more note for those who seek to get a little
more thrill out of their D3. If you didn't do it already
upgrade your video card! I had a cheap TNT2/64MB video
card. The card did ok with D3 on 800x600, but after I
upgraded to GForce-5700/128MB ($200), and run D3 in the
1600x1200 (or so) resolution it felt like a new game!!
Thanks again for your input,
-zorro
P.S.
If anyone want to trade Forsaken for Quake3 let me know.

you might not be able to find lander in stores.
as a result you can download it for free at "home of the underdogs". i
can't remember the url, so just type that into google.
there is also a demo available on teh net.
if you are having trouble getting either of them running, try running them
in compatability mode. (and try installing the full game of lander to
C:\lander), or just give me a buzz.
it's one of my favourite games.
