| I havent been able to play descent for ages since I bought a new PC
with XP on it. I can load the game but its to fast & my ship keeps
bobbing about like a car with no dampers so that I cant controll it.
I wish I hade kept my old 486 just for the purpose.
I see references to Descent 3 in this group. Is there such a game &
will it run on XP and be playable.
Thanx

Could you please be a bit more explicit. I also find that D2 and D1 (both
commercial versions, Descent II is v1.2) are difficult to play on my 2GHz
machine. I looked at the icculus site and found references to the shareware
version and also to a 1.x>1.2 patch. Is that what you meant?

| For D2X, get the newest zip from the link under Binaries (yes, Mr. Bell has
zero web skills , it has an installation readme. Once its running, cap
the framerate to 35fps in one of the menus, and you should be good to go
There are two different .exes, you can try both. Same procedure for D1X.

Thanks for that. Web skills I can do without! What matters is the content
not the form. To be sure I'm not being ultra dense, can you confirm that D2x
is NOT a shortened shareware version, but a re-compilation of the full
commercial version. In the index of /d2x/bin I see several zip files, as I
write I am downloading d2x-0.2.5_mingw.zip. No doubt more will become clear
when I unzip it.
Thanks again.

| The exe has been recompiled to work with either shareware or final data
files. They want to eventually have a universal exe that runs D1 datafiles
also.

Err... sorry about this. I've downloaded the latest dated zip file in the
d2x/bin directory as I said.
Unzipping it gives
d2x.ini
d2x-gl.exe
d2x-sdl.exe
sdl.dll
sdl_image.dll
No installation readme.
Thanks for the info abt shareware vs commercial versions.
