"Falcon 3.0" Demo & Windows95
|
|
| CaryMG 2006-08-03, 3:48 am |
| I stumbled upon the demo for this most exquisite example of the
beautiful flatshaded 3D polygonal asthetic for computer
flightsimulators "Falcon 3.0".
Here's where I got it > http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/game/43
I've talked with other people who use XP & they say they can run the
demo just fine but when *I try to do it with Windows95 -- the main
computer I use has that -- a black box pops up that says > FALCON 3.0
DEMO REQUIRES AT LEAST 560K OF MEMORY
This computer has a *gig of RAM lol
Any help, please, as to what I can do to play this interactive
masterpiece ?
Thank You In Advance!

| QUICK NOTE:
I'd rather do it on natively on my computer rather than use "DOSBox"
Thank You!

Hehe, you must have obviously not been around in the dark days of DOS <g>
The 560 (and it really needs over 600) k mentioned is for conventional
memory, not stick memory <g>
To get more required tweaking two files, autoexec.bat and config.sys.
However, best to not mess with them if you're unfamilar with the process <g>

This may help you.

...being a thread that came out about 1999. I actually got the full
game the year before but gave up. I was able to run it (not sure if in
DOS window or under Windows 95) but had a recurring problem in which
the sim would go into some reverse time-warp (didn't go backward, just
slowed down; I thought it was simply some hi-def flight model version
of a departure, but then it happened at low-level, with the plane just
hanging over an airfield - obvioulsy there's no way to depart the laws
of gravity). If you like the game so much, and get it to work - you
should look out for
http://www.cdaccess.com/html/pc/conskies.htm
Conquer the Skies, a four-pack containing Falcon (not sure if it's the
"Gold" version), "Fleet Defender", the finest of the small number of
dedicated F-14 sims, 1942 Pacific Air War, and "Gunship 2000". You'll
probably spend more on postage than the winning bid itself on E*Bay
(though you won't have to put up with the Falcon demo's time-limit).
Not to knock Falcon, but you're probably better off going for EF2000 -
it was a more atmospheric game, with better graphics and (IMO) remains
one of the finest pre-Pentium sims ever made.

What FatKat said
In hacking dos for more memory, it's usually more like "Do a lot of
this's and then do a lot of that's", and can be a real pain. I always found
it a fun challenge, but there's a reason dos isn't around anymore as an OS
<g>.
If you really get the itch to play F3, better to just get an old dos box
and use it. I've still got it along with some other classics on one;
they're still a hoot.

Cary, forgot to add that EF2000, though a DOS game, ran okay on my
Win95 machine back in 1998, and I don't remember having to do any HIMEM
tweaking or anything like that. Rather, implemenation was painless.
There is (was) a dedicated Win95 version, as well as an F-22 sim from
the same company that ran on Win95.

Yup. "Wings of Glory" may not have the graphic precision of modern
sims, but it DOES have Warren Spector as producer.

| Get yourself a little app called VDMS at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/
Read the directions then install it.
Right click on the Falcon3 exe and select run with VDMS and viola...or at least
viola on my XP Pro machine..your results may differ. I have a Audigy 2 soundcard
and Selected soundblaster for my sound card. Falcon ran fine and I was able to
shoot down a few planes....hehe. Course the joystick doesn't work and I suspect
that unless you find a joystick that runs through the gameport you may be out of
luck in regards to joystick.

PS Played the crap out of F3...back in the Damage, Inc days. EF 2000 was a lot
of fun as well but seeing Falcon 3 graphics all over again makes me remember why
I loved Su-27 so much.

DosBox will work too and it has joystick emulation. You can use a USB
joystick in dos games with it.
