Cannot complete Il-2 mission
|

| Hello there.
I finally upgraded my PC to the point that I can play Il-2 Sturmovik...
at low resolution... but that's another story.
I've got a mission that I cannot complete. It's the 16th or 17th
mission in the Russian fighter career; there are 5 Ju.88's and 6
He.111's coming to bomb Stalingrad and the mission objective is 'don't
let them get through your sector'. Trouble is, I don't have enough ammo
to bring down 'em all and my AI friendlies are not that good. When I'm
lucky, I get three of them down, and If I'm vEEEEEEry lucky I can ram a
fourth and still have my a'c in one piece. But even when all of them
are down in flames or fleeing for their lives, having dropped their
bombs at random, I always get a 'MISSION FAILED' screenshot. And it's
not even one of those missions when you can go on anyway. I'm stuck,
and getting bored of this.
Is this a bug? Should I start a new career? I have a rank of Polkovnik.
TIA,
Bonehammer

shoot in ENGINES, nowhere else but engines!! pick one engine and fill it
until it catches fire OR VERY black smoke.. that means that that plane
is VERY soon going down.
attack from above. so gain alt and zoom on them from angle of at least
50 degrees and shoot at the engine..
repeat
that should do.. DO NOT waste your ammo! shoot ONLY when you are VERY
close (do not star fireing at more then 250 meters!)
be very patient and you will make it

Thanks for the tips. Indeed, as luck would have it, first time I played
the mission after posting this message, I succeeded. It never fails.
The damn game won't confirm a 'taran' kill unless I've shot at least a
bullet at the aircraft, but I shot down a couple '88s before my guns
jammed, so I'm quite satisfied.
Being unable to shoot seems to be a major problem with the Yak-1 - the
LaGG and MiG were not so prone to gun jamming. Did this happen with the
real a/c, too?

well.. in this game gun james only if they get hit by the bullet
it is very common when attacking bombers to get a hit in wings or engine
part and to get gun jammed or an engine with holes (and that is bad )
tactic is usually very simple.. be fast, pick a spot on plane (vital
one), shoot from very close (snap shots) , extend and repeat
especialy long nosed liquid cooled engine fighters are very sensitive to
bomber fire.
here read this (its for 190 but it can be applied on any other fighter
plane)
