Author Win 98 PC for Glide games

I have started to gather parts to build a PC, and need some expert advice.
Intend to use :
Board - ASUS P5P800 with 1 Gb RAM
CPU - Pent4 3.06GHz
Video - Voodoo 5 AGP or 2 x V2 SLI
OS - Windows 98SE
KVM - Belkin w/sound (to use current monitor etc)
HOTAS - CH USB Throttle/Fighterstick/pro throttles

Apart from limiting RAM to 512Mb for LongBow, are there big issues with the
system being too fast for older games ?

Forgot to add :
Currently dual booting WinXP and WinME with NVidia Video on main PC, and
it's no good for my favourite stuff :-)

Forget about the V5 AGP, for a P4, only certain old SIS chipset boards will
support the V5s older-style AGP, it won't physically fit because of the lack
of a keyed slot, let alone function.

What Chris said. A pci version works ok though.

How about a combination of the 2 x Powercolour V2 (SLI) with some other AGP
card ?

Sure, but you can only use one format at once; i.e, pci or agp, but not
both at the same time. I have a voodoo card in a pci slot and an ATI card
in my agp slot. I just make a quick bios change to choose which I want to
use at the time.

I thought the V2 cards only kicked in for "glide" games ?
Using the external pass through cable. Every thing else (2D etc) auto
handled by the AGP card.
(That's the way it worked on my old PC) ?
The V2 has no 2D or VGA function.

You're probably correct; I've only owned V3 on up.

That's right.

BTW - I'm running a separate glide machine using an MSI AMD based
motherboard with no problems making the V5500 fit.

The ASUS P5P800 board "looks" to have plenty of space around the AGP slot,
providing the RAM is placed in first ?
The AGP is described as AGP8X/4X (0.8V, 1.5V only)
The Voodoo5 doesn't have a 1.5V "key slot" and I think it is 3.3V ?
Looks like I have to find a board with an "AGP Universal Slot" ?

You won't find any boards that support the 3.3 volt AGP and your CPU, my
"old sim box" had a MSI SIS chipset board and P4 1.8 Willamette and don't
think it would have supported even a Northwood. Your best bet would be to
find a V5 PCI on EBay, a modern AGP card and V2 SLI should work okay but it
sure will be hard to go back to the days of no FSAA.

My Glide game set up -

CPU - AMD Athlon, 1.4 ghz
Motherboard - EPOX 8KHA+, These or similar are available on ebay
Video - Voodoo5 AGP
OS - Win98 SE
RAM - 330mb of ram
Sound - Hercules Gamer XP sound card
HOTAS - Saitek X36 USB
Pedals - CHpro USB pedals
MSforcefeedback2 joystick

I use Bob Church's rudder swap to run the pedals with the Saitek X36 usb

KVM - Connectpro MasterIT USB
Best KVM I have found, allows the use of all keyboard special buttons
and extra mouse buttons. No problems like other KVM's

3D glasses Eyeart wired with wicked3d drivers for Win98SE this works
real well with LongbowII

Systems works as flawless as Win98SE system can. I switch my controllers
back and forth with the KVM, which has extra USB ports allowing a USB
hub to be installed. Nice thing about the Saitek X36 is that drivers for
both Win98 and WinXP exist and the external rudder driver is available
for windows98.
