AMD 64 4200 Dual Core
Asus A8N-E Ultra Motherboard
WD 80GB 7200 8MB Buffer
Nvidia-XFX 7800GT PCIXPRESS SLI 256MB
Memory to be disguessed later [1gb], but if you have an
opinion......
And your opinion on how many watts for a new Antec P/S...

Is a 'go fast' machine? Used 99% for games. Like lots of eye candy.

Displayed on a Sony 32" LCD

Thanks, Bob

Kinda fast, but not really fast... If ya gotta have the fastest, go for an
FX60 system.

Also, for a faster boot drive, go for the WD Raptor 74 or 150 SATA. 10K RPM
makes a LOT of difference. Use a slower/bigger IDE drive for data storage
if needed.

1 GB RAM should be plenty. 350 watts should be plenty, but a TruePower 550
couldn't hurt.

AMD 64 4200 Dual Core 89W, (89/12)*(1/0.90) = 8.24A on 12V2

7800GT 57W (presumably all from +12V, the 12V1 rail) ==> 5A on 12V1
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vi...tion2006_5.html

Hard drive 2A spinup, 0.5A idling on 12V1
CDROM 1.5A max on 12V1
Fans, maybe total 0.5A for three small fans, on 12V1

12V1 total so far 9A (less, if I did a spinup versus runtime accounting)
12V2 total 8.24A.

Even a TruepowerII 380W is enough. (Although I'm sure other people will
suggest an even bigger model.)

Make sure the Antec model you select, has not had problems starting/running
on an Asus motherboard.

What output resolution does the 7800GT have to support, to drive
the Sony display ? Is it using DVI or VGA ?

Do you *really* need dual core? Ok, it's definitely the way ahead, but
right here, right now it's a poor bang for buck *unless* you have apps
which will definitely make good use of it.

I'm contemplating an Opteron 165, but only because Fraps can make *very*
good use of the spare core which is doing very little indeed in most
flight sims. The problem is you get a low multiplier on that CPU. The
same-ish money buys you a 1Mb cache San Diego single core with a higher
multiplier and much better overclocking potential.

It's a messy time to be trying to work out what to buy though. So many
CPUs, so many benchmarks which relate poorly to real world use.

I would jam all of those components into a case that can accommodate 120mm
fans to help keep the racket down. IMHO, 2Gb couldn't hurt either 'specially
for FEAR and SHIII.And I agree that you should probably get an SLI certified
PSU, and a faster boot disk. Why no soundcard? The X-FI series is fantastic,
Quake 4 is like being in a real warzone, as is BF2. Anyway, thats my
opinion, happy gaming!
