Can anyone tell me what new (if any) military sims are in the works?
Is there a sequel to lomac or anything planned?
Cheers

BOB ( Battle over Britain), by Oleg Maddox, not due out for while yet. I am
a big WWII buff, and have thoroughly enjoyed IL2FB/AEP/PF , so am very much
looking foward to that one.

Theres Olegs BoB already mentioned and a remake of Rowans BoB just out.
Seems to be becoming a trend updating old sims, I hope it continues, the
group that have done this game are also going to doing B17 2 apparantly
http://www.gmxmedia.net/bob2/
Also a Falklands Sim in the works, I'm really looking forward to this but
its an independant effort so AFAIK no firm release date

| Sounds like a great idea but the screen shots for fighter ops are
really hokey. Hope they havae some realistic 2D pits

this month scanning the web doesn't seem to bring up any other info
about this... does anybody know who is producing this?

| Gone are the days when we got truly imaginative sims like Tornado, EF2000
and F117 Stealth Fighter. Our choice is pretty damn poor these last few
months. The older sims are coming bcak to haunt us which isnt necessarily a
bad thing its just that if everyone is anything like me Ive already played
BOB and Silent Service 2 etc to death years an years ago - why would I want
to buy relatively the same game again? But the annoying thing is that the
computer power is there to make a truly brilliant simulation - it would just
require a lot of development time and dedication - ie upfront money. If I
had the money I would set up a firm myself! Maybe one day if I ever win the
lottery.

It's not like the premise behind any of these ideas were all that
original to begin with. A WWII flight sim based on the "Battle of
Britain"? A submarine simulator set on U-boats in the Atlantic? F-16
simulators that let you fly in some the world's worst hot spots? It's
all in the execution - and if anybody can show a significant leap in
gameplay and immersion from 1997, I may just go out and buy it.

Actually there ARE some untapped areas for
game designers. Personally I would like to
see sims covering British and Japanese sub
services, a defense of Malta sim, a defense
of Japan sim, a Japanese surface fleet sim,
and the like.
Personally my peeve with sims now is the
priority of hardware-hogging graphics over
gameplay. The origial SWOTL versus "Secret
Weapons over Normandy" rather says it all.

If someone would market the old DOS favs
in an XP-compatable format I would stand in
line many hours to buy them.

And (I suspect) you'd play them for about 15 min and XXXXX about the lack
of realism and the graphics. Rose colored glasses, baby, rose colored
glasses.

Lets just say my old DOS favs stayed on my
hard drive longer than the graphics-laden unfun
modern sims.......

And yet, even though you'd stand in line FOR HOURS, have you built a 486
and actually tried to play the old games?. It's not as hard as you think.
I'm not saying they weren't great, for their time, I'm saying there's lots
of reasons we look back favorably and its not just that, to paraphrase,
todays games suck.

Couldn't these "games" be made by modding existing titles?

It's a shame that there's the perception that only sims
featuring American subs in the Pacific or Germans in the Atlantic will
sell, because I'd love to see a sub sim featuring the Royal Navy's
submarines. I can't see one being released other than as a set of mods
or an expansion pack, sadly.

Indeed. The US lost 55 subs from all causes
in WW 2, while the British lost 88. They fought
a hard battle in difficult places, and paid the
price. A sim that highlighted that would not be
out of order.
