Beach and 20mm were quite fair actually, mentioned a few warts.
I just skimmed it, thought others here might be interested, being a flight
sim news group and all! ;-)

The review didn't make that compelling a case for buying it. Sure it
sounds like they enjoyed it and it had some improvements over F4, but
so many of us have barely scratched the surface of F4, let alone SP or
FF to bother with yet another upgrade.

excellent review in my opinion. i'm not sure how detailed they can get
considering the manual for the game is some 700 pages long and the
dynamic campaign system is a thing of legend. I've never purchased a
jet sim before but because of what I've heard about the original Falcon
game and addition to the Allied Force, i'll have to take a shot. I'm
spoiled by prop sims in terms of their simplicity but I really enjoy
immersive campaigns like the one Allied Force will have. The other
realy interesting feature not talked about in the review is that
somebody can run a 24/7 war that can be joined at any time. I know a
guy I fly Il2 with is going to fire up a 24/7 server that can be joined
at your leisure. stats are maintained as well as the progression of
the war.

They didn't have to get very detailed - just explain how it was an
advance over F4 and its free upgrades.

Do you fly your prop sims at full-realism?

One thing very encouraging from the review is that they are making the
game scalable to allow newbies like myself a chance at figuring out the
basics.

I do fly Il2 PF 'full-real' but there's much less to worry about there.
based on my limited reading of Falcon, full-real will be far more
challenging for me to pick-up than say a wwII prop sim. I'm just gonna
have to bank on a very steep learning curve.

FatKat,
this is not another upgrade. If anything, it is the original F4, that
works! Granted, there is some new stuff, but this new F4 is one of the
only ones to have permission and access to the original code and exe,
so the main theme here is stability. This appears to be what the
original F4 was SUPPOSED to be before Microprose screwed the pooch back
in 98.
You can only fly the F-16, but I think down the line, mods will be
allowed.....they just won't be allowed to be as buggy as they have
been.
Right now, its just back to basics, except it works.

It comes in a box with a CD, like the original. You load it, and fly.
Not wait a year and a half for 108, etc., etc., etc.

Couple minor things got me saying hmmm (long ago pre-ordered though).
No slider for the bubble.......so what is it "set" at in the game then, or
is it completely gone ? Also, a mention that there's move naval action in
the Balkans theater; wondering what that means, as I think it's safe to say
there'd be a carrier or three parked off North Korea in reality.

But then I'm not expecting a new falcon, as the calling card of this
release is supposed to be online stability, etc.

A pool needs to be started though; how long until this falcon release has
just as much of an install dance as F4 ? Because guarantee it will <g>.

Dunno, but you can mail order it from

It will be, but they recommend ordering it direct from Graphsim.com website
if you want it before it hits the store shelves there. I pre-ordered (from
the US) and am looking forward to it.

Well, back in the day when it was released (November, December1998), the
bubble slider was needed since the minimum specs were a Pentium 166, with a
recommended Pentium 2 400!!! Considering that your "low-end" PC today is
nothing short of a Pentium 4 1.6 GHz, I don't think that the processing
power needed for that "bubble" is much for today's PC.

Could be, but then again, F4 with the various add-ons, will still eat a
new pc up pretty good(campaign), and that's with the bubble at three. Have
to see I guess.

everyone else enjoying the game.

Same here, but after a couple days and the order didn't ship, I went out and
bought it, and called and cancelled the pre-order. My order is showing as
shipping today, and I paid for overnight delivery so should get it tomorrow,
according to FedEx, so not too bad.

Strange thing at the FedEx website, it says "Jun 28, 2005 8:08PM - Package
data transmitted to FedEx" Well, it is only 6:22AM right now, so either
their system is screwed up and it actually shipped last night (which would
be good ;) or something is awry. But I digress.

True. But I guess it depends on the total number of units on the
battlefield. If that hasn't changed significantly then one would only think
that running at a maximum bubble of wouldnt' be much issue. Only problem
would be, however, for online play. Where all that unit data would have to
be transmitted. I believe the biggest thing with this bubble was for the
ACMI recorder to get full playback of all units within your bubble. We will
have to see.

From all I've read, it seems like they refreshed it to make it "right" and
not necessarily add everything, in order to keep F4AF stable. I'll take that
any day. If this "bubble" option was never released in the first place, we
would be no worse for the ware. I just hope we aren't all disappointed with
what F4AF has to offer. I, for one am truly excited since I all but gave up
on Falcon 4 despite all my efforts to keep up with the SP/FF updates. I
commend all those volunteer hard workers, and I think it paid off in the end
as Falcon 4: Allied Force. At least there is a decent publishing house
behind this, so there is hope to see some official add-ons in the future.

I received my email from Graphsim today that my order was shipped and I
requested next-day air delivery (I mean hell, $39.99 with shipping is still
cheaper than most games at $49.99 retail). It should arrive tomorrow. I
might just have to be (cough, cough) sick on Wednesday ;)

I stopped by Wal Mart on the way home today, as I had read they were
supposed to have today, and of course they did not have it.

I may end up just ordering it, I hate shopping! Ended up buying a damn air
purifier instead from Wal Mart for my room.. augh!!

I went out and about looking today. Usual suspects, Frys, CompUSA, EB, even
walmart as I recall someone here mentioning it and still nothing.

The looks I got from a few of the sales guys was funny in itself. "You want
Falcon 4 point oh" with a shocked look. Then I explain the situation so
they look it up and sure enough it did say available today.

I almost want to pay for this one just to make myself feel better about the
original F4 which CompUSA had marked down for $19.99 with a $20 mail in
rebate. This less than a month after release and was the spiral bound
binder version.

Simware claim to have it available:
http://www.simw.com/index.cfm?fusea...etails&pid=1386

They usually seem to be pretty good. I got FS2002 a few years back before it
was available in the UK stores. They seem to source stocks abroad if it's
not available direct to UK distributors.
