Author Good books to read
frankiekam

Some of my favorite WWII aviation books:

Pierre Henri Clostermann - The Big Show
Great for European Air War fans.

Saburo Sakai - Samurai!
Great for Pacific Fighters fans.

Can anyone recommend other books?

What about a good book the Vietnam Air War?

Flight of the Intruder - easily the best novel to come out of the VN
air war.

As for non-fiction, I'd recommend "Phantom over Vietnam". It's not a
glorious book - the author doesn't shoot down any MiGs, and there
aren't any segues on ludicrous ROE. Instead, it's sort of a slice of
the war, leaving you to judge for yourself.

Bradley's "Flyboys" is a great read, as it gives one a taste of the
mentality of both sides in the Pacific war. A page turner for sure,
IMO.

Almost forgot, another great read, especially for the pacific theatre
is "The Jolly Rogers", about squadron VF-17, written by the leader of
the squadron, Tom Blackburn himself. After reading the book I had to
buy Trudgian's print "Fighting 17, Jolly Rogers". The book was that
good.

"Scream of Eagles" by Robert K. Wilcox. It's the best book on fighter
tactics (dogfighting) and it's entertaining too.

"Pierre Henri Clostermann - The Big Show
Great for European Air War fans."

Has just been re-issued in the full version. The one we knew in English
was edited to save paper.
Likewise, "The First and The Last" had the first couple of chapters
lopped off in most American editions. It starts with the Battle of
Britain; Galland's book detailed his training and his service in Spain.

"Saburo Sakai - Samurai!
Great for Pacific Fighters fans"

The Japanese (original) version is said to be somewhat different from
the thing with Martin Caiden's name on it. He's supposed to have
screwed Sakai out of some of the royalties as well.

I saw the PoC mini-series years ago - about the time I first played
"Their Finest Hour". It was pretty good as well - and unlike the
pilots in the book, they got to fly Spitfires, not just Hurricanes.
This was probably my intro to the "Battle of Britain".

One Day in a Long War : May 10, 1972, Air War, North Vietnam
By Jeffrey Ethell

Many stories of that day including Randy "Duke" Cunninghams famous shoot
down of the infamous Col Toon (or was it toon?)

Got to say the aviation world lost a great author when Jeffrey Ethell
fatally crashed his P-38 war bird in 1997
