Can anyone suggest a decent hard drive backup software package that is
relatively affordable? Norton Ghost is a piece of shit if you ask me. It
constantly errors out when trying to do a backup, and Norton expects me to
pay $29 for service support! What a load of crap. This thing doesn't work
from the get-go, and for no good reason. I'm interested in a reliable and
flexible backup package.

Thanks!

Ghost never gave me errors when using it in Dos. There is Drive Image
http://www.drive-image.com/
Best to ask this kind of question in the "storage" usenet group.

I used Powerquest's Drive Image up to the 2002 version with good results
(occasional weirdness now with ntfs partitions) but Powerquest was acquired
by Norton a few years back.

The one I posted is actually called "R-Drive Image 2.0" and is by
r-tools technology. Check out the url.

Acronis

I've used Norton Ghost and Drive Image and they both let me down
with "What's a hard drive?" error messages

Yeah, what's up with that? Their prime function is to, well, *back up hard
drives!*

I can't believe there isn't a reliable backup program out there. I guess
I'll just have to continue to manually drag/drop files to my "archive"
secondary HD until I can find something reliable. How crappy is that. I
emailed Norton, and haven't heard peep from them yet. I also refuse to spend
$29 for support on a product that doesn't even work.

I've only ever backed up partitions with Norton Ghost 2002 and it
never gave me an error and worked 100%. Maybe you guys don't know how
to use the program correctly or something?

I think youre right codex. Ive used both ghost and disk image for years and
though I havent been completely error free with either they are both in the
very high 95% reliable if used correctly.

Use an old PC setup as an ftp server to store all of your backup images.
Much easier and more reliable than CDs/DVDs. I only use DVD as an archive
for offsite while the ftp server is mirrored.

At the least a slave drive used only for images.

How can you not use the program correctly??? That's a silly answer. Click
"Backup Drive", select destination, and away it goes. I would hope there is
nothing more than that. I even tried in Safe Mode, after a clean WinXP
installation, and all with the same results.

I used Drive Image in the past without issue. I even tried Norton Ghost in
the past (can't remember what version) and at that time it caused problems
too. I might have to stick with Drive Image 2002 despite its flaws.

I have never had good luck with Norton products. Their anti-virus is nothing
but a system hog filled with glitches. And was quite disappointed when
Norton bought the Powerquest products. And as has been proven yet again,
that Norton is not reliable.

I typically backup directly to another hard drive, with that HD backed up to
CD or DVD every few months. I don't care to do a mirror RAID because despite
how "reliable" it should be in the past when I did that, I had one HD crash,
and the other was toast too. I lost everything except for the backup I did
three months prior with Drive Image.

Hmm, here we differ. We are talking Norton Ghost, right? I've always
used it by booting from a boot disk in dos mode and never had an
error. You are using it in Windows mode and not a dos boot disk with
Ghost on it. The version I have doesn't even have a mode usable from
within Windows. I suggest you try it using the dos boot disk method if
it gave you the option to make a bootable Ghost disk. It's like
Partition Magic, I never use that from within Windows too, always use
the dos boot disk with PQ on it and never get any errors. Other people
run it from Windows and sometimes get errors and screw up their
partitions.

Norton Ghost 9 DOES NOT HAVE a DOS boot mode!!! It is Windows only. That is
what I liked about it initially, but now that it doesn't work, it may not be
such a great idea.

I always used Partition Magic and Drive Image from DOS as well. Oh well,
guess I will have to stick with Drive Image 2002 and deal with its
limitations until something better comes along.

For years I've used Nova Disk to back up. As I've upgraded my O.S.
from time to time, I've also had to upgrade the version of Nova Disk
as well. The reason I've stayed with this package is - it can do
either Full or Partial backups, and selective Restore only the files
needed.

If all I want to do is copy an entire partition to a blank HD
partition, the MaxBlast 3 package which came with my 160 GB Maxtor HD
works great. I don't know if it can be bought separately or not.
