Have you applied Sp1?
You shouldn't need the CD after that ...

One of the few flight sims I have not purchased.

But is it any fun?
(waiting on a Vietnam era flight sim since Flight of the Intruder)

If it's anything at all like its nearly identical twin, Strike Fighters:
Project 1, then no - it isn't any fun. Incredibly sparse and neutral
feeling. I specifically did NOT buy this title because it's basically just
a repackaging of SF:P1 with new terrain and new skins (all of which you can
download as add-ons to SF:P1 anyway, from what I understand).

I know there's a cadre of folks who really like this sim, but I just
couldn't get into it. Too arcadey and too sterile.

I agree totally. I sold my SF:P1 copy because of it. Great game if
you're into modding plane skins though! ;-)

I have WOV too. Honestly, I like it. You can adjust the difficulty to
the point where the aircraft have a pretty decent flight-model,
external navigation & target indicators are off (boxes around targets,
floating waypoint diamonds) and the weapons difficulty can be set to
where it's actually a challenge. This includes trying to lock up a
Mig21 to nail him in the face with a Sparrow, or trying to lay a load
of iron bombs on a runway or a bridge, or going hunting for Sam sites
around Hanoi with the early Shrike & Standard Arm missiles, while the
NVA are shooting the damn things at you. All with no HUD, and very
basic radar and countermeasures. And lots of flak coming up at you.

The cockpits are pretty good too. Most flight and engine instruments
work. The HSI works for waypoint navigation, at least similar to the
way it did in Flanker. The weapons modelling is pretty good, whether
A2A or A2G.

The environment is "livelier" than SFP1, by a longshot. If you don't
stay fast and loose over Hanoi, you will get your XXX perforated. Lots
of flak, lots of Sams. When you set up a strike mission, you get other
friendly flights doing their thing as well as you.

What WOV lacks:
1- It has a campaign bug that makes accompanying air units "disappear"
over time. Apparently a fix is in the works.
2 - Mid-Air refueling - it'd add a bit of depth.
3 - More detailed terrain & targets. - I like doing night-time armed
reconnaissance missions out of Danang in the F4D, just me and one
wingman. I just wish I got zoned to a wider variety of locations. It's
almost always in RP1.

Good to know - thanks for the information. At this point I can't see
picking this one up (getting into Falcon 4.0 lately, and still active with
IL2-FB), but it might fill a gap in the future.

When you set the game options to Hard you end up with a pretty good sim
of flying an older jet. All the arcade stuff goes away, and there are
specific things to learn about flying & fighting in the F4, which is
the big kahuna of this sim. The surrounding environment could be a tad
denser but it's not bad. I run it stock, except for a couple of .ini
edits that prevent the F100 from getting assigned A2A missions, for
example. I know the online "community" for this sim can be a bit
offputting, but they've developed some amazing mods. An f105-g has just
emerged, that is quite impressive. Not to mention weapons packs that
give you the early bullpup missiles and a bunch of other things. As for
the ground-pounding - it seems that the game spawns ground objects like
AAA sites in your vicinity. Hence the ever-present flak over Hanoi.
Similar to the way EAW spawned convoys on the ground for you to strafe
on your way back from Berlin in your Mustang. Same programmer -
figures.

I've begun a new campaign in PF - A20s again. At this stage, I just
don't have the time, or the desire, to spend my precious simming
moments memorizing software options and radar modes. I just can't.
Feels like work. For that same reason, Doom 3 is floating my boat
lately. Someone else mentioned it in that other thread. Lots of creepy
atmosphere in that game. It really puts you in the moment.

It's A20s and F4s for me, lately. I'm a big student of the eras
involved, and I want to get away to that. You can keep the fey F22. BVR
clickfest madness I'll trade that anyday for an F4 at 500ft loaded
with clusterbombs heading for a target. Or dragging a slow A20 over the
mountains to dance with the Japanese flak.
