Well, I spent several hours in a campaign, and the inital campaign missions
are somewhat boring as you spend a lot of time just traversing the sea to
your destination to patrol a certain area for 24 hours. However, as soon as
you transfer your sub from one base to the next, the trip is nothing short
of nail biting. Kill a torpedo boat with your flak gun, then get four
destroyers on your XXX. Forget about sinking one, as the others will be
bombarding you while you try to lock on a target. Funny thing is that one
hit me as I was diving to avoid a collision, and it did minor damage to me
but sank him!

Starting the second set of missions from the new base in France gets hairy
real quick. Even though those torpedo boats seem like easy targets for your
flak gun, be warned that it will only garner attention of any surrounding
gunships. I don't know why, but it seems that my torpedo targeting has been
getting worse as I continue playing, the AI gets better, or I am getting
impatient. Or just a combination of both.

The AI seems great. The *WILL* hunt you down and if you're not careful, they
can taret you and destroy you relatively quickly. Running in silent mode is
important to do once an enemy has been spotted incoming. Problem is that
treking along at 2-3 knots makes it difficult for any quick evasive
maneuvers.

You have to gain "Renown" as you continue your campaign to get more
experienced sailors and to uprade parts of your U-Boat. I thought the crew
management would be a pain, but to find out, it isn't all that bad. Just
keep an eye on your guys and swap them out with a simple right click. Keep
cycling them that way and they will remain more or less refreshed. Once in
battle however, it is obvious that you should take advantace of most your
guys. At times all sailors including commanders get stressed and you have to
relieve them temporarily to get some rest. But this is not good if it
happens in the middle of battle as you need as many resources as possible.

There are a few bugs to speak of. For one, I get an occasional CTD. Not sure
if it has to do with my drivers or the game. Sometimes when doing an
external view to admire the beautiful graphics, the forward key gets stuck
and you can't get out of it, so now every time you are in a view that uses
the "up" key it will stick, so your view will constantly move forward. I
notice this happens sometimes when holding the shift key modifier to
increase camera movement speed. And finally, the save game seems ok, except
it doesn't seem 100% reliable. I mean, I was surfaced when I saved, but when
I reloaded later, my sub was under the water, and had dudes on the "deck"
like some crazy Jacques Cousteau or 20,000 leagues under the sea. See this
image:

LOL!

My campaign continues and has sucked probably a good 15 hours out of my life
so far and don't see it ending any time soon. I highly recommend this game
for any miliatry sim nut. Truly a work of art and hope they fix the few
glitches.

I cant agree more, and just to add I tired Shoot 1.6.4 voice recognition
with sh3 last night and it adds quite a lot to the experience. Worth trying
if you have a few minutes to set it up. I can send ya my profile if ya need
it.

I've seen a few people mention this. Definitely fix that before I will
even consider buying it. Oh wait, it has Starforce so I won't buy it
anyway.

And it doesn't have flyable torpedo bombers?

As far as the ship running in to me, why couldn't it damage the ship's hull
so that it took on water? That's perfectly possible. And while I don't 100%
agree with their choice of copy protection, it seems to work fine
nevertheless.

What is wrong with starforce? It's on Atari's GTR and doesn't seem to

Something I'm not aware of going on???

But you didn't sink too? Highly unlikely. I've heard of people ramming
destroyers with little damage to their subs but the destroyer sinks.

The game is definatly growing on me the more time I spend with it. Although
I still think the crew managment is a pain the positives outweigh the
negatives. I just nailed a nice fat troopship and spent the next hour with
destroyers all over me, thought I had got away only be be jumped by a plane
the moment I surfaced. Now I have get my rather beat up boat back to base.

It's your loss because youre missing a wonderful bit of code over something
so trivial to the average honest user and which has literally NO EFFECT on
your PC experience other than pushing a button and putting in a CD.

You should be much more worried about what Mr. Gates and Co. shoves down
your throat in Windows than SF..

Well when you grow up (I am kindly saying that because I have no idea
what your stats are), you may realize that all the information you
give away just to live, such as info for grocery store shopping cards
to get sale prices, mortgages, credit cards, car loans, physical
details for job medical exams, and on and on are much more of a threat
to your privacy than any super scrutinized piece of code for some
dippy game will ever be.

If you are that up in arms about it, just get the game and enjoy a
great experience. After that, reformat your hard disk, reinstall
everything, then reconnect to the net. Or better yet, if you are
really that worried, best never connect to the Net again and whatever
you do, don't DL software or visit web sites.

It just seems to me that people want something to worry about that
they can control. Never mind how day to day they give away more
information that they CAN'T control that can be subverted. But when
it comes to their computers, OMG stand back. That they CAN control to
the point of missing out on a stellar game which is one of the main
reasons that got a high end computer IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Anyway, if you enjoy sims (and if you are here I suspect you do) SHIII
is one that comes along only once in a while. It would be awful to
see you miss it while you might easily load a POS sim if only because
it didn't have SF.

Your choice.

Yeah, the visuals are great! However, 15 m/s is hardly a storm, in my
book. It's just 7 Beaufort. What's odd that I can't man my guns at
even 8 m/s (4 Beaufort). My man are no wussies! (It would be nice if
they're allowed to at least firing a starshell....)

Cheers!

While I agree you'd be missing out on a great game, I also understand the
issue with Starforce. This is an example of how their fix for pirating hurts
the honest end users and not the pirates. I can almot guarantee that an easy
solution to pirating it will be floating around the public soon. I know it
will fight casual piracy (i.e. a friend asks "copy that for me"), but in the
end it may hurt them more. I hate to see them do that with a simulation game
since they are so few and far between, and even good ones at that.

On the other hand, buy the game from a store that will accept a return. Even
point to the back of the box when you're buying it and note the "Notice:
this game contains technology intended to prevent copying that may conflict
with some CD-RW, DVD-RW, and virtual drives." Then ask if you can return it
if it has a problem. Most EBGames and GameStop stores will accept returns,
and *then* file a complaint with UbiSoft. The thing that gets me, is it says
specifically CD-RW and DVD-RW no mention if it affects standard plain
readers.

One thing that Ubi could do is at least publish a comprehensive list of what
CD and DVD drives it *IS* compatible with.Whoever developed StarForce should
already have that list assembled. I sent an email request for a
comprehensive list of compatible CD and DVD drives and burners. We will see
what comes of it.

To this day, however, I have never had an issue with copy protection. Even
Steam worked fine for me. Perhaps I am a lucky one when it comes to this.

So because other people are having a problem, all of us that don't should
return ours?

I feel for those that can't get it to run and Ubi *DOES* owe an explanation
and solution, but don't rag on those of us who have it working just fine.

It's already been cracked and pirated for a few days now. No, I don't
have the pirated version. I just know because, unlike Skippy above, I
stay on top of things. SHIII Starforce has caused problems for some
people with just regular DVD drives and not just DVDRW drives. They
never compiled a test of compatible drives. That would cost them
money. We are the guinea pigs. At our cost.

At 4 Beaufort? I do sail the Northsee myself, with a 32 feet sailboat,
and believe me, 4 Beaufort is nothing special. At 8 Beaufort things
start to get hairy...

I understand the chance that you're hitting something is kinda small
with an heavy see, but nevertheless, they should man the gun.

Cheers!

I see what ya mean. Maybe a decent trade off woulda been to have the crew
on deck lose *nerve* quicker the taller the Sea.

Although I just went and watched Mavericks here in Cali our avg ocean isnt
quite the same as the N.Sea ;)

statement as ever I don't know what is... SF doesn't stop piracy
(don't be fooled, all SF games are being duped and put out for use in
useable distros), it only inhibits legit players/consumers.

I won't play SHIII because they've not yet delivered torpedo bombers in the
Pacific. As was PROMISED on the box. *sob sob sob*

You don't offer much to gain a clue from. All I saw in your posts was
anti-StarForce rants. I figured it was privacy issues. Other than
that, even with your link, I don't see why you've got yourself all
worked up over. Its a sim, a damn good sim by most accounts for only
$40. Unless you just don't like sub-sims, I can't see why you
wouldn't give it a whirl. The odds of it working are overwhelmingly in
your favor that you will have no problem. But, as I said, you don't
say much more than you dislike StarForce.

You lost me. SHIII is a North Atlantic sim. Not Pacific. Or are you
referring to another UBI-SOFT release Pacific Fighters? But below,
you praise IL2:PF ... so that can't be it.

Heh, yeah. 7 whole pages of complaints. My God, 126 more pages like
that and we might actually get to 1% of a 200,000 installed user base!
Sell the house and run for the hills!

Think as you will. I can dig up tons of dirt on Starforce. You, on the
other hand, just keep your head up your arse like the others and
pretend to be happy campers. Now it's done.

I've been playing it for a few days now, and have done two or three campaign
missions. I agree. It's a fantastic game, and every difference to it's
predecessor is a leap in the right direction. What totally blows me away
though is the water effects, truly outstanding! It looks fantastic on a
calm, glassy day, and when the weather turns back and the sea state worsens,
the waves become choppy and capped with foam in the most realistic manner.
The only thing I don't really like about it is, that I'm not very good at it
yet!!
