Author Couger - Uber2 NXT gimball mod initial impressions

Hey gang,

Just wanted to share with you, I received my Uber2 NXT mod with Hall
Sensors, and installed it this past weekend. I have been very busy of late
getting ready for this Mexico trip, and have not had a lot of time with it
yet, but so far I am way impressed!

Understand, I was NOT unhappy with my Cougar at all. I have loved it since
the day I got it shortly after they were first released. I now own 2 and a
half, one new in box still, and an extra throttle.

The install went pretty smooth, total time to install the joystick mod with
the hall sensors was probably around 3 hours - would have been sooner if I
had not installed one of the hall sensors in the wrong orientation - took me
a while to figure out why I was not getting an X axis ..

Once I got it properly going, I fly a couple missions in Pacific Fighters.
Total time for me to make the adjustment from my stock gimbals to the Uber2
NXT was about 10 minutes tops. Man, this thing is so smooth - no transition
flats, soft feel toward center, with gradual tension increase as you move
the stick further. I like it a lot.

One thing I have now noticed after a few more missions, I am going to have
to increase the ai skill setting - I am nailing those suckers even better
now in dogfighting. I was fairly decent at gunnery in dogfights, but would
struggle at times with stick induced oscillation from the original gimbals.
Not so with these! Very very smooth.
You have to adjust to the lighter touch toward the center, some deadzone
helps.

I can tell very quickly, I am going to love this, it has just made a great
stick perfect for me!! The smoothness of the Hall Sensors supplied by Cub
Pilot ( no pot worries now), combined with the precision gimbals supplied by
IJ, is hard to believe. Incredible!

Yes, it is a fairly expensive mod. It is not for everyone. If I had not of
had the money to spare, I would have been quite happy flying along with my
stock Cougar.
So I would recommend anyone with a Cougar and has a love for it, that can
and don't mind spedning money on toys, take a look at this mod. The support
from IJ is the best it could possibly be - he's a class guy!

You can see more on this mod, along with pics, at this thread :

For me, it was well worth the wait, and the cost. Plus it was pretty neat to
see the progress of the gimbal mod as it went along. IJ probably won't be
doing these too much longer, so if you ever thought you might want to check
into one, don't wait too long.

I also got the Hall Sensor kit for my throttle, will be installing it
probably on Sunday.

Off to the great desert southwest, later!!

LOl, hey, when in Rome.....

I do have some friends down there, and we already have plans in place for
Friday night. .
Dirty job, but someone has to entertain those good clients!

Hmm, not even sure I remember exactly what it was when I ordered it - IJ is
in Australia, so some depends on the dollar conversion at the time. Plus I
don't want to hear the anti-Cougar crowd bust my chops claiming I had to
spend that amount to make anything right .

Click on the his banner link on the above mentioned forum thread, and drop
him a note requesting current price.
It ain't cheap.... but when you see the finished product in hand, you'll
appreciate why..

Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention. I got a couple sets of
speedbrake/dogfight housings with the mod as well, same guy offers them,
they are precision machined aluminum, to replace the stock plastic ones that
come installed in the Cougar. There are reports from some of the speedbrake
plastic housing breaking over time, due to a misalignment issue from the
factory. These aluminum housings correct that misalignment issue as well.
Put them in, and won't have to worry about that happening in the future.
Mine never broke, they weren't that pricey so thought I would go ahead and
get them.
