Sorry but I was so pissed off about the ridiculous amount of time to
finally get the game downloaded and activated I went off.

This game blows me away...the world is real. The Graphics amazing.

The more I play, the more (relatively minor) issues I have, but it's

that alone.

PS My biggest issue is what might be motion sickness, which I've never
suffered from before. Someone suggested it might be because HL2 looks so
real it confuses more brains than previous games. Your head expects to
feel the motion because it's so realistic. They might be onto something.

That's funny, because I have no problems with HL2, but I did with HL1 and
was never able to finish it because of that. I am hoping that with Half-Life
1 in Source maybe I'll be able to finish it! That would be nice.

The game is very good, I've just finished the dune buggy bit and having a
lot of fun. That said there has only been one wow moment so far.
Steam has spoiled it a bit, its a computer game for chrissake, nothing can
be good enough to justify that stupid idea.

months it takes to make it a back-shelf $19.99 bargain. Maybe by that time the

The preview movies really spoiled a lot of it for me, they showed many of
the best bits, and were around for so long that it;s hard to be surprised
by anything*. Having said that, even if I'm not too impressed by much of
the gameplay and (lack of) plot explanation, at the very worst HL2 is the
Lomac of FPS games... so pretty sometimes that it just takes your breath
away. The water is so realistic you have to stare at it really hard until
you've convinced yourself there's a pattern in its motion. Of course it
may not be quite so pretty for some folk on lower detail, but wound up to
max it's stunning. The reflections in Perfect mode in PF are amazing, but
HL2 takes it a whole order of magnitude further towards total immersion.

I'm still waiting on delivery of my new AlienWare - and they seem to be
lagging in getting it assembled. I'm going to have to make a call today and
badger them.

As soon as the new PC is up and running I will install F4 as you specified
earlier and ring you up in ICQ.

Before you install drop me a note with your ICQ #.. I seem to have
lost you from my contact list during my last "purge".. If it's MP you
are interested in I would rather you install one of the SP setups,
they are more stable for sure in MP (and maybe in SP also). Also, if
you are interested in flying planes other than the F16 (A10, F15, F18,
etc) then you may want to take a look at the new Aeyes cockpits. The
new installer is excellent, allows for installation into any of the F4
versions (BMS or SP) easily.

Looking forward to it..

I'm interested in both online and offline capabilities. So maybe I should
do two separate installs (if that's possible)? I'm thinking of joining up
with one of the virtual F4 squads listed here recently (Free Birds, or Stray
Dogs), so I'll need multiplayer capability for that - but I'm also
interested in checking out this much-vaunted dynamic campaign that is
available in single player.

My ICQ account is dead - I'll create a new one when I get the new system.

James

G. Patricks

2004-11-18, 5:50 pm

That adds a new variable. If you plan on joining up with the FB's or
SD's you need to do an install exactly as THEY specify. Yes, you can
easilty do multiple installs... I already have a FB install that I
use, it's based on the SP3 exe (as all the SP's following SP3 are)
with some twists. Its quite stable online and off.

I'm curios about your statement - "but I'm also interested in checking
out this much-vaunted dynamic campaign that is available in single
player."

You do realize that the dynamic campaign is 100% available (and ALL I
play online BTW) in ONLINE MP, yes? It sounded like you have the
notion you must play SP to get the dynamic campaigns.. maybe I just
read it wrong.

There is nothing like flying an F4 Campaign online with a human
wingman/wingmen trying to accomplish something, calling out on voice
comms (for HELP! usually.. lol), and eventually landing if all went as
planned.

Lemme know when the "Alien" arrives!

Your assumption about my assumption is correct. I was undeer the impression
that in order to play a campaign that you had to be single-player only.

Then that's a GOOD surprise, eh? As far as i'm concerned Campaigns are
the only way to fly in F4. Don't get me wrong, there have been many
GREAT TE's (Tactical Engagements) written by dedicated souls that are
excellent and are actually mini-campaigns themselves but flying a
campaign online is unbelieveable.

Dec 7th... my birthday, Pearl harbor Anniversary, and the day that
Falcon 3 went on sale in CT at the Egghead Software store in Westport.
Got it home (2 hour drive) and found the 1st F3 bug. The 5.25" flopply
(1.2MB) installation looked for a 3 1/2" (1.44MB or 720KB) drive for
some unknown reason. If you didn't have BOTH drives you couldn't
install off 5 1/4" floppies!!

Hope your luck is better!!! LOL

As with the other complaints, for every one person reporting problems
there will be many who don't. However apparently there's a mention of it
in the retail booklet somewhere; even beta testers reported it. Given that
would be a relatively small sample, it may be an indication that this is
more widespread than normal reports of gaming motion sickness.

Boo hoo. It's not that bad man. Sure, the system had an initial
authentication hiccup but they resolved that. It's the first time this
authentication method has been used for ANY game. And trust me- you
returning the game because of Steam is *not* going to make it go away. It's
more than just an authentication system believe it or not, and while I too
first thought it was a bad idea, I finally think it's worthwile (and will
likely become the standard one day).

I swear- people seem to forget the amount of work it took to play computer
games in the past. Steam is nothing. I remember it taking me about a month
of online research and boot disk tinkering to get Privateer 1 to run with
enough resources for both sound *and* the joystick. Incredible.

Yeah - the bad old days - where I popped in the CD, ran "setup.exe", selected my
install directory, typed in the CD key and then waited for the install to
finish. After wish I could run the goddamned game to my heart's content. As
opposed to the Big Brother method of Steam, where you have to get "official
approval" of your legitimate CD key via their overloaded servers before you can
activate your game.

Well, they're using the same movement system, which lacks any kind of
immersive head bobbing. The physics is an entirely different matter.
Generally superb, though I'm inclined to think -- perhaps falsely -- it's
a sequel built more around the physics than the plot.

It's still well worth the price of entry though. I've found other games
more immersive (both Far Cry and D3 actually) but HL2 pushes the FPS
boundaries much further down the path towards a realistic environment. The
airboat sections are simply stunning... when I'm not wondering whether to
throw up or not ;-)

Well I admit that my 2 hour plus 'waiting a little bit' may have been

There are just too damned many good games out there right now. I don't have the

Been playing it at 1600 x 1200 w/maxed out details on an NEC 22" monitor and
Dell XPS system and it's simply incredible. The immersion is terrific.
I've lost interest in all other FPS's since its debut. Clearly the 2004

So does Call Of Duty. Matter of fact some servers for COD
still require your CD key. But they did get it right in COD, in
that you can play online without the CD in the drive at all.
Only single player, and a few servers need it in.

I don't think he means that tinyurl is malicious code, but that you could

Before you install drop me a note with your ICQ #.. I seem to have
lost you from my contact list during my last "purge".. If it's MP you
are interested in I would rather you install one of the SP setups,
they are more stable for sure in MP (and maybe in SP also). Also, if
you are interested in flying planes other than the F16 (A10, F15, F18,
etc) then you may want to take a look at the new Aeyes cockpits. The
new installer is excellent, allows for installation into any of the F4
versions (BMS or SP) easily.

Looking forward to it..

Yeah - the bad old days - where I popped in the CD, ran "setup.exe", selected my
install directory, typed in the CD key and then waited for the install to
finish. After wish I could run the goddamned game to my heart's content. As
opposed to the Big Brother method of Steam, where you have to get "official

activate your game.

I'm interested in both online and offline capabilities. So maybe I should
do two separate installs (if that's possible)? I'm thinking of joining up
with one of the virtual F4 squads listed here recently (Free Birds, or Stray
Dogs), so I'll need multiplayer capability for that - but I'm also
interested in checking out this much-vaunted dynamic campaign that is
available in single player.

My ICQ account is dead - I'll create a new one when I get the new system.

I'm not sure what's helped, but I definitely seem happier now. I've
enabled vsync, left the boat section, and switched to 1600x1200 (for no
other reason other than HL2 looks gorgeous and I'm fortunate enough to
have the vid card power to do it). I did try 1024x768 to maximise frame
rate for a while, but that in itself didn't seem to do anything obvious
for my nausea.

It may even be that -- as you pointed out before -- the lack of head
bobbing took a while to get used to. I'm really not sure. But I played for
quite a while yesterday and didn't feel unwell. Fingers crossed it'll
continue that way.

Remember when Doom and Rise of the Triad and all ofthe early shooters were
coming out and people were getting motion sickness *from* the head-bob?
