Male, 37 y.o. looking for Falcon 4 squadron. Been playing
a little flight sims on and off over the years, and want to
play online in a more organized way.

Where do I go as a starter ?

I would say Falcon 4 is substantaily more "fun" IMO. It is NOT as
stable as IL2 online for more than 4 players in a online Campaign
though. Thing is there are literally THOUSANDS of units
moving/planning/attacking at all times in F4's dynamic campaign
environment. There is nothing like it and my guess is there won't be
for quite some time. Tha aircraft can be flown and ordanance delivered
with relative simplicity even at "full realism" settings. There are
certain basics that have to be learned then in order to simply survive
and you move up from there. I'm always up for teaching new guys and
can walk you through getting the best F4 setup loaded depending on if
you want the "prettiest" install out (IMHO it's FF3 with HiTiles and
BaZT) or the best MP (IMO it's SP4.x, MP5-1.exe) Also the Aeyes new
F16, A10 and F15 Cockpits, etc sure are nice when you fly those
ships.

You know how to get hold of me...

All I've tried with respect to racing sims is Live for Speed; GTR demo; and
(what's it called?) Formula 4? I've got a nice Logitech MOMO wheel but it sits
largely unused, because I have to drag it over to my PC and plug it in. Whereas
my sticks are always right there.

Back to Falcon 4. I know that there's a real steep learning curve for this
game - true of any realistic jet sim, I'd wager. Does it make sense to just do
a standard install (with 1.08 patch installed), and make my way through that fat
manual that came with the game? From what I understand all the later add-ons
like SP3 and whatever else is out there really deviated from the original game,
making the original manual largely obsolete. And now that I think of it, I seem
to recall the existence of a leather-bound tutorial manual that was available
(for like $100.00), done by some bloke in jolly old England. Or was that for
LOMAC?

Hey Icer what does Rapace do? I have a FF3 install already and Rapace wants
to reinstall FF3.

Whats the deal on Lomac? Im going to pick up a copy as soon as I find one
but I dont recall much being said on its positive merits. Does it have any?

From what I've heard, LOMAC Is a real hog when it comes to PC resources. Better
make certain you've got a good and fast PC. I also heard it was very unstable
in the beginning, but from what I understand there have been patches to
alleviate this. One thing is for certain, the graphics are top-notch, and the
new physics model is quite impressive.

P4-3.5ghz Prescott 800fsb 9700pro. Not the latest and greatest but runs
most current stuff close to max.

While I like FF3 it still seems pretty unstable and shareware'ish (first
ctd's in quite some time). FF3 has a manual (PDF) but its not so much a how
to but more of a what it is. None of the keys for the radars are the same
as the binder and its so hard to see the mfd's anyway (Im sure a vid card
issue) so Ill just grab up Lomac. Not a bash of Falcon4/mods but imo its
time seems to have passed when up against stuff like IL2/Lomac. GPL is in
the same boat imo. Its been maxed out and while still great cannot compete
with the likes of NR2003 or rFactors overall improvements.

Lomac looks suweeeet but Ive heard so much negativity Ive kinda just ignored
it. I think EB has it for $20 Ill call em up tomorrow.

Icer,

How would you rate F4 in terms of fun-ness (both offline and online), as
compared to IL2 (which is really the only sim I'm familiar with)? As with
IL2, I have found F4 very difficult to get into right out of the box, mostly
because of all the controls inside the F-16. I am just wondering if it's
wirthwhile to look into a jet squadron as well as my existing prop squad, in
order to get more familiar with more modern planes.

Thanks

You know, something just struck me...F4 doesn't support multiple joysticks, does
it? I'm not sure how eager I am to revert to the twist rudder and throttle on
my stick. Currently I fly with the MS FFB2 in my right hand, and the X45
thruster/rudder in my left. It's second nature now...I don't think I could go
back. Now as for TrackIR - I could probably use mouse-pan mode, assuming that
F4 supports a mouse-pan from cockpit. But the stick thing is the one that's
getting at me now.

Maybe with this hot-XXX new PC I'm allegedly going to get in December I'll be
able to play LOMAC at 640x480x16.

Disregard earlier question about Lomac :-) Im having a blast with it. It
took some work but Ive found the *happy medium* tween graphics and fps. I
avg about 60 but at times near 100 and other times near 20 :-)

I'm still very attracted to the much-heralded dynamic campaign in F4, though.
If there is a way to make my dual sticks work with F4 I think I'll take that
route.

LOMAC is pretty.... pretty BORING... LOL. I STILL had major FR
problems with my 6800GT and a P4 3.2GZ whenever anything blew up..

Sheesh, you spend a ka-zillion dollars on a nice system and use a
friggin frankenstein HOTAS!! Get a CH USB Flightstick/Pro Throttle/Pro
Pedals setup and you WILL be in heaven... Be the last stick you will
need for MANY years.. +/- $300 US..

As for rudder in F4, its almost never used, certainly not for
coordinated turning. Just for taxi and minor corrections in flight,
usually landing. The throttle on your MS stick is adequate also, not
like a friggin 109 where your constantly giving input...

Boring? Have you tried the A10? It is a kick in the XXX imo.

You either havent run it since the 1.02 patch or are unwilling to go the
extra few steps required to get it running well on your rig. It took some
work to get it running good for me also but now its smooth and sweet and in
20+ hours not a single CTD (like every other game Ive run in the last 2
years).

F4/FF3 while I appreciate the effort the modders have done has reached a
point that now shows its age and weaknesses (sharewareish). The main one is
the constant CTDs unreadable HUDs graphics tearing blah blah blah. You get
my point. How much fun can you possibly have worrying more about a CTD than
the mission.

So I take it the answer is, "No dual stick support in Falcon 4.0". Hmm. This
complicates matters.

There is no way in hell I can justify purchasing a new stick combo right now,
and certainly not for $300.00. And to be sure, I'm quite happy with my bastard
setup as it is, even though it requires two USB ports instead of one. (Not that
I've got a lot of exposure to other systems - I hear the CH equipment is quite
nice, and maybe at some point in the future will upgrade to it - does their
stick employ FFB?)

I wonder if there is some third party app out there that can combine separate
game inputs and mux them together for older games?

CH gear require THREE USB ports! Of course I use a USB Hub for it, so
it only uses one of my system ports.

No idea. CH does it in software, part of the way its programmed.

Agree 100%.. IL2 and the whole add-on.... I mean "new" sims offered by
Oleg et al are crap to me. I don't dislike the way the campagns are, I
just think they are GARBAGE. I HATE the "must complete this mission to
get to the next", the mission "objectives" being highlighted, the
added bonues crap or whatever its called.. It REEKS of XXXXing XBox
gen-X bullshit. I know, I should be grateful that we are blessed with
this new genre but guess what... i'm NOT.

Falcon 4.0, EAW, LB2, RB2, EECH and EEAH, all of these offer better
"playability" than the "pretty" shit that is rolling out of
commie-land.. Thanks for NOTHING.

Of course this is just MHO.. LOL

Disregard earlier question about Lomac :-) Im having a blast with it. It
took some work but Ive found the *happy medium* tween graphics and fps. I
avg about 60 but at times near 100 and other times near 20 :-)

LOMAC is pretty.... pretty BORING... LOL. I STILL had major FR
problems with my 6800GT and a P4 3.2GZ whenever anything blew up..

Sheesh, you spend a ka-zillion dollars on a nice system and use a
friggin frankenstein HOTAS!! Get a CH USB Flightstick/Pro Throttle/Pro
Pedals setup and you WILL be in heaven... Be the last stick you will
need for MANY years.. +/- $300 US..

As for rudder in F4, its almost never used, certainly not for
coordinated turning. Just for taxi and minor corrections in flight,
usually landing. The throttle on your MS stick is adequate also, not
like a friggin 109 where your constantly giving input...

I don't believe so, no.

CH gear require THREE USB ports! Of course I use a USB Hub for it, so
it only uses one of my system ports.

No idea. CH does it in software, part of the way its programmed.

109s? Who flies those anymore? <vbg> I'm spending most of my "squaddie time"
in a Dauntless these days...

LOL
