Author Track IR 3 Pro?
Don Burnette

2004-10-12, 12:52 am

Over on Frugal's forum, someone suggested I check out Track IR. I have seen
folks mention it, but never really delved into seeing what it really does.
Checked out the website, and viewed some of the videos. WOW. Looks pretty
neat, and not as high priced as I thought it might be. Would be nice being
able to look around like that, follow the enemy, etc. I don't like
constantly using the hat to try and look, and I especially don't like
padlock view- messes me up.

Can I get some opinions from those that have it?

1: I tend to get motion sickness, but not when flying sims or driving cars -
usually just fps games. Reckon this would play havoc on me?

2: Is it really as good as it appears in the videos? Smooth panning, etc.

3: I notice some of my favorite sims support it, ie IL2FB, EECH, and even F1
Challenge. I am almost sold on it - hell, I guess I could even stock up on
dramamine if need be.

Anyone that has one, how do you like it?

Thanks,

I'd be worried about the motion sickness, I dont suffer but recall others
saying they do. TrackIR takes a while to get used to and set up to your
liking but for me at least is well worth the effort, it adds to the
immersion and I dont think I could be without it these days.

Holy &^*!

That looks awesome! You just had to show me that link huh? I think that
seals the deal for me, motion sickness or not!

Btw, when is GTR supposed to be released?

week.

Hmm, not available in the states? I didn't look that closely, will check it
out.

No, have not run a demo yet - I'll keep eyes open for the new one this week.

Thanks,

If you can find a copy of F1 2002 then you can download the add-on GTR
Racing and also Ferrari Challenge for free. I have those two and it's just
awesome. GTR Racing (the add-on) looks similiar to the one they're planning
on selling, except there's an updated list of drivers, of course.

I won't play a sim that doesn't support it. I will never go back.
Mitch_A

Much much much more than that Nathan. Go try the GTR Press Demo then come
back and tell me that its just an updated F1-2002 mod called GTR. The new
GTR is based on the F1C engine but the similarity end there. Go try
yourself, really. By the time you get out of the Pits you'll fully
understand.

I am definitely convinced.

Ok, I hereby am gladly accepting donations via PayPal .

Lemme see if I can find a way to get one of those bad boys in the states.

Thanks for the feedback,

Tell me this. How do you turn off the "Pit Limiter" in the game demo?
This looks like an awesome game, but I can't get above 78 kph. What's

Hehe. Weve all been there James ;) Hopefully its a tad more identifiable
in the final.

Controller/Accessories tab. You have to scroll down.

OK, got it. It certainly is easy to overrun your upcoming track now,
isn't it? I keep ending up in the damned sand and can't get out.

This looks like it would be a helluva lot of fun with the correct setup,
but my joystick isn't giving me a lot of joy on this.
Mitch_A

2004-10-12, 12:52 am

Joystick? This title really needs a wheel and pedals. I recommend a
Logitech Momo Racing (Black Rubber grips) as this was the wheel the devs
used to create the Sim and is pretty cheap. I had one and was happy with
it.

Unfortunately I just found out the new demo to be released this week will
not include Simulation Mode. I does include an entire race weekend Semi-Pro
and a single AI that you can replicate up to 19 times.

Yeah, I've got a cheap old wheel and pedal set sitting around somewhere -
but it plugs into the 15 pin gameport; it's not USB. No FFB of course.

Since I can't buy F1C anymore, other than EBay ripoff, it's good to hear
that the new GTR will be based on that engine. However, since the company
has no idea when they're going to start selling in the United States, I
don't know if I want to get my hopes up by trying out the demo. The movies
do look good though.

I had a chance to try out a friend's latest Track IR (not sure what
number, but it's the latest or he wouldn't have it) with IL2FB
recently. Motion sickness was not my problem, never inclined that
way. But it sure was a struggle to use it. Little things like my
inclination to lean slightly to the left or right in the seat when
making a turn - that screws up your mind, because the view shifts just
like you turned your head and yet you know you didn't! Even after
over an hour just flying around trying to adjust my coordination, and
I was still WAY short of capable. Might have gotten a little better
over that time, but not even close to workable. I even managed to
screw up a simple landing, spending too much attention to keeping my
head locked straight ahead. He assured me it works fine for him, but
it did take some time for him to fully adjust (coordinate) to it.

He let me have his earlier model, so I'll have one of my own to learn
with now, when time permits. But that 1+hour session at his house was
very humbling, to say the least.

Interesting.

I think I read, you can adjust the sensitivity on how much you turn your
head - perhaps relaxing that might help?

I think I still am going to have to have one of these.

You need to include a dead zone. And it does take some getting used to.
Once I put my mind to it, though, it was a mtter of 30 minutes before
I had it dialed in. I will never go back.

There is a dead zone that you can program to prevent the issues you are
referring to as well as the response curve so that it will only move a
little when you turn your head a little, but increases turn-rate much more
rapidly the further your head turns so you don't have to turn your head
completely sideways to look sideways or behing you on screen.

Takes a little fiddling, but it works rather well with IL-2. Been struggling
with other games. I only have the TrackIR 2, but am considering the IR3 if
it is that much better as they say it is.

In addition to fiddling with the dead zone and response curve, mapping the
TrackIR "re-center" and "enable/disable" keys to convenient butttons on your
HOTAS can help compensate for disorientation and the effects of body
english. "Enable/disable" (which allows me to use the standard IL-2 snap
views) is especially useful for landings.

I do not have one but a memeber of the DHBG picked one up and loved it.

If you have an inexpensive web-cam sitting about check out Cam2Pan. It
is not as good and eventually I found it to be too imprecise to keep
using it (I think the real problem is my web cam is old and probably
shot plus it doesn't support neat things like leaning in the cockpit in
AH2) but it will give you a feel for how the whole 'move the head move
the view' thing will work for you.

The 5 minute demo is free.

I had the same problemwhen first trying Cam2Pan and I found the best
solution was to map a keystroke combo to turn off Cam2Pan in the sim so
when I needed to just look straight ahead I was able to do so. I would
suspect that TrackIR has that same ability.

Trustworthy? Hell, they are better than that.

I do not have one yet and the tech support people have been answering my
'pre-sale' questions.
