Flat Panels and flightsims?

| So what is the deal with Flat Panels and flightsims? Do they really
cause shearing? Are there any flat panels that are better than others?

| Greg,
Most of what I am reading states that there are problems with some LCDs with
slower response times. Look for at least 16ms with ideal being 12ms. I am
currently eyeballing the 17incher from BenQ.

I have an Iiyama E431S on this box and it's a great monitor.
Response time of 16ms, no real problems in any game/sim I've
ever tried.
But this isn't my gaming box, and given a choice I still
would much rather fly on the 19" CRT. It's not just the fact
that the LCD looks best at its 1280x1024 native resolution.
Besides, I usually game at that res anyway these days. It's
the contrast range and lack of real blacks that annoys my eye
when compared to the same thing on the CRT.
But LCDs have other benefits... like being more acceptable to
spouses, less likely to break your back, and very pleasant to
use in general desktop situations.
If I could only have one monitor then... well, I spend more
time in desktop use than gaming. So, er... I'd probably spend
the money I spent on this on a 21" CRT instead :-)

Yes Greg... the good flat panels are better than the bad ones !!!!
First thing... size matters !
Smaller LCD's are faster than larger LCD, so it depends on what you are
aiming at.
At this point, the new 17" LCD's are both good and cheap
And numbers are nothing, all that matters is "how does it look"
Dont trust a fast response time, some 12 mS monitors will look worse than
some 20mS monitors.
The best in reviews so far seems to be the BenQ's and ViewSonic's....
Monitors like Sony, Philips etc etc are probably good monitors, but not for
gaming
I have had a Samsung 191T 19" LCD for years now, and have happily played
games on it
It is a 25mS monitor with average contrast and slow response, according to
reviews, but it still have served me great, and I still think it is great
for games...
Currently playing Doom3 on it...
I just bought a ViewSonic VP201b ( havent received it yet ) with some of the
specs even worse than my Samsung ( only thing better is response time 16
mS ) but all review sites says it is outstanding for gaming, so I am
expecting a lot.

Thanks for the great info! I have a VP201B (21" yeah!) at work and
really like it. I was going to get one for home to game on, but thought
I should ask what others have experienced. Please let us know what
you find when you finally do got it going.
I have a Geforce4 MX 420 in a DELL 4550 if that matters.
Thanks again, I do appreciate it.

I borrowed a 21" Samsung 213T from work recently and played Lomac on it. I
didn't notice any shearing and the game looked superb. The only problem I
had was that because it's so sharp, unless I ran it at the native resolution
of 1600x1200 I could see the pixels like bricks. I had to up the
anti-aliasing to smooth it out, which dragged the frame rate down (as if
1600x1200 at full detail didn't enough!...) I think as far as games are
concerned I like my CRT. High resolution games just seem to look better
displayed on the imprecise old technology.

Greg,
Dell 2001FP is best bang for buck. 20 big friggin inches, 16ms response
1600x1200 native resolution, but scales very nicely to 800x600 and
everything in between up to 1600x1200. Not a single problem in any game
including flight sims (LO-MAC, IL-2, Falcon 4 in particular), Doom 3, C&C
Generals, among many others. Great monitor for the price. And you can
usually catch it on sale for around $700. As a matter of fact it is $679
right now!!!

It also has four inputs: 15-pin VGA, DVI-D, S-video, composite. I currently
have two PC's and my XBOX connected to it. Just switch with the push of a
button.

Oh yeah, and it has two USB ports on it as well as an optional speaker bar
(14 Watt) that can be attached. I have it and like that too.
