Hi,

You might find it at the GNU.ORG website, if not, then do Google search
for them older versions!.

Cheers!

That depends on just how old you want.

v4 patch level 80 etc. are still fairly available. (I think that was the
last of the 4.x line, but don't hold me to that.)

Version 3.x ended at 3.1 and 3.1+ (a 3rd party extended version.) There is
a v3.21 but that's just a hacked version to run on the PC.

v2.x can still be found somewhere or other. I think I got my copy of the
google newsgroup archives. I don't know what the last version was, or
whether it's available. I just have 'a' version of 2.x

v1.52 still exists, too. Also from the newsgroup archives. I think this
was the last of the v1.x line.

v1.00 should still be locatable. Again, I think it was the newsgroup
archives.

Nothing before v1.0 still exists. Mr. Cracraft says he doesn't have copies,
and that if any exists, they'd be in the GNU archves, but he doesn't feel
it's worth asking them.

An even older version does still exist... Namely John Stanback's public
domain 1987 chess program that became the basis for the GNU Chess line of
programs. This was posted in the newsgroups, too.

It should be pointed out that the older versions are, well, out of date when
it comes to compilers. Some hacking will be needed since they expect old
compilers and were written for UNIX and 16 bit DOS.

Also, the user interface is pretty dated, too. They don't work with
Winboard / XBoard. (Well, Winboard / xboard was designed for gnu chess, but
the older versions behave a bit differently.)
