Dreamcast - Part 4...

| Star Wars Episode I: Racer - Ultra quick racer based on those pod racing things
from Ep1. Quick note: This is not a conversion of the Sega-made Racer game in
the arcades, this one was actually done by LucasArts. Pretty cool too, I like
the things they'll do to you during tunnels and stuff. This could have been
pretty fun online...
Street Fighter Alpha 3 - Though I absolutely cannot stand the shitty gameplay of
the single player game, I absolutely love it during the co-op "Dramatic" modes.
Playing this with a buddy, or with a computer partner against the cheap-XXX
opponents is just XXXXing great. Never seems to get old, no matter how many
times you get your XXX whipped by that cheap-XXX slut Chun-Li. ;)
Super Puzzle Fighter II EX - Upgraded version of SPF2T. Adds two new modes:
Columns and Tetris Attack(though officially they are called "Y" and "Z"). I
think a few new secrets were added in(alt. versions of characters, etc). It was
relatively cheap when it first came out(only $27), so I jumped right on it as I
already had SPF2T on the PSX and knew of its goodness. Still wish this thing
could be hacked so that we in the US could have played it online. Quick
question: Someone had told, at one point, that the import Saturn version of
SPF2T had the two new modes in it...that's not true, is it?
Super Runabout : SF Edition - The third in the Super Runabout series(I think). A
really fun game for *anyone*. What I really dig is that you don't have to do any
of the missions...and if you don't and the time runs out, game doesn't seem to
care...just do whatever, doesn't matter. It's fun to see just how much damage
you can cause before you blow your car up. Past that, the actual game is pretty
fun too with the various goofy missions they'll have you perform.
Suzuki Alstare Extreme Racing - Like Test Drive V-Rally(see below) it hovers
between too sim-ish and just arcadey enough. Really fast motorcycle racing, like
Manx TT I really dig it. Fun track designs, and some solid control.
Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage - Though I really dig the hardcore violence
that occurs each and everytime Guts pulls out his sword, the game seems to be
more than just a bit on the hard side. Anytime you're in an area where you can
pull the sword out, just kiss it goodbye...
Tekken 3, Bleem!: - I don't much care for Tekken, but to support Bleem I picked
this disc up(and Tekken 3). My buddies all loved it, so other than supporting
Bleem, I got it so they'd have something to play as well. Makes Tekken 3 look
very good...though sadly(and not Bleem's fault) the game just lost so much of
its graphic luster in its port to the PSX(the 3D backgrounds mostly). I don't
understand why they couldn't have done it on the PSX, I mean, look at Soul
Blade, that thing had 3D backgrounds...and imo, it looked great for the time.
Tennis 2K2 - Picked this one up at Toys R Us about two/three months ago. Man, it
rocks! I never would have guessed Tennis could have been this fun! About the
only downside to this game is the bullshit tournament setup...where you can
actually miss tourney's, or just not even remotely have enough money for any of
them.
Test Drive 6 - A lot like Magical Tour Racing(see below) this one got the
"Bleem" treatment, and that's pretty much it. If it just didn't play so well,
I'd write it off like everyone else did...but I just dig the floating mechanics
of the Test Drive engine...they make for some pretty amusing races(especially
when watching a CPU driver collide head on with on-coming traffic).
Test Drive V-Rally - Wow, now here's a serious Rally game. XXXXing-A, what's it
got, like 40 tracks or something? Jeez! Seems to hover between really sim-ish
and sorta arcadey...and that works out this time around. Amazing graphics, and a
solid framerate make this one of those must-have racers on the DC.
Trickstyle - Hip hoverboard racing game. I love this game! Long-XXX tracks,
cool, and easy to pull off stunts and some fun scenery to cruise over(and
sometimes through). I don't much care for the stunt track they *Make* you play
in order to open other tracks...but it's not too bad I guess.
Typing of the Dead, The - More fun than regular HotD2 imo. This game is just
blast, love playing it with a buddy. Nothing like tearing through zombies with
your keyboard. Though it's not the DC version, for a few more thoughts on the
game in general, I wrote a quick review for the PC version:
http://www.whipassgaming.com/PC/typingofdeadpc.html
Unreal Tournament - One of my favorite games of all time...and I originally
played it on the DC for the first time(even though I owned a Mac capable of
playing it at the time). It still sends shivers up my spine to think of how much
fun I had playing this one online, and offline with a buddy(via TDM). The DC(and
PS2) exclusive just rock to no end...it kills me that they've never been ported
to the Mac/PC versions of the game. For more:
http://www.whipassgaming.com/genesi...tournament.html
Virtua Fighter 3tb - Like Sonic Adv., everyone but Japan got the superior
version(again, take that you bastards!) with the graphic fixes and whatnot.
Walt Disney World Quest Magical Tour Racing - Though Eidos took the lazy
route(imagine that) and Bleemed this one, I still really like it. It hauls
XXX...I mean, shit, you could probably pass up a Daytona car in these karts! The
graphics, though not DC-worthy, are still pretty good...and the way they worked
each of the rides from Disney World into their own tracks was pretty nifty. All
in all, it's really a solid racer...as hard as that is to believe.
World Series Baseball 2K2 - Not nearly as good as WSB2 on the Saturn, but hey,
at least it's not WSB2K1 right? ;)
Zombie Revenge - A lot like Dynamite Cop, but with Zombies. I actually saw this
in the arcade before it was announced for the DC, was pretty impressed. Lots of
goofy action, with even goofier speech bits. It blew my mind when I got towards
the end and you actually get to go into the Mansion from HotD. Too cool.
Dreamcast odds and ends:
Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine Vol. 1-11 - Various demos from the ODC Mag.
Sega Dreamcast Generator Vol. 1, Vol. 2 - Packaged with various versions and
releases of the DC(much like the PSX demo discs that would come with the PSX).
SegaNet - Has some demos, as well a setup for those who wanted to sign up for
SegaNet.
Web Browser 2.0 - The original browser, shipped with the DC. Not too bad, and
much improved over the Saturn Netlink browser. Like all of the above, features
Sega Swirl...one of the best multiplayer games of all time. Love snakey! I had
talked the guy who did the game, he said that there was a possibility of Sega
Swirl 2 coming to the PS2, and would be online...but sadly, the site is offline
and it doesn't look like it'll pan out.
Well kids, that's about it...my contribution to keeping on-topic conversation
going on in the various Sega groups.

I wish Sega had allowed Capcom to do their own online thing in the US
like in Japan. Whwere they got virtually all the fighters in online
versions.XXXXers! (pick whichever party you want to play the riole of
XXXXers: Sega JPN or US< Japanese gamers, Capcom, etc.)

But Japan got the Project Berkley demo disc. Oh wait, you don't like
Shenmue. HEATHEN!

No, actually the original US browser was "Web Browser".

Would have been nice...though I question how well things would have played via a 56k
modem. Hell, they didn't exactly go well on the broadband in Capcom's first
attempt(Capcom vs SNK EO on Live).

A buddy of mine bought the import while we were at EB Games one day. I tried to tell
him that it wasn't as good as the US version, but he just had to have it. He had no
idea what the Project Berkley disc even was, either. I still wish he'd bring it over
so I could at least watch it.

Oh, you're right...my bad. My black Sports DC came with the 2.0 browser...

SB didn't actually have 3d backgrounds. Heck, Soul Calibur didn't either.

How was Street Fighter 2 on Xband? It was direct dial, but still... And
how have they done with Street Fighter Anniversary on Live?
And even if the fighters sucked, maybe they would have bothered to
release the online Twinkle Star Sprites or Puzzle Fighter here if they
had had the network.

| This is in response to that Trpi guy, but his Usenet program (or,
entirely possibly, my newsserver) is incredibly XXXXed; his "followups

defined as a newsgroup)...
You need to show a video clip; Donkey Kong Country will look like it has
3D characters, but they're just rendered sprites.

On SB, Are you sure? I remember actually seeing 3D pieces in a lot of the
backgrounds...unless, maybe it was more like 2.5D and only one side was
really visible no matter what camera angle. Hmm....

Not sure, I wasn't lucky enough to get in on all that(nor the Sega Channel) back when it
was available).

I think SFA is actually doing pretty well on Live. It's odd, I thought all ths time that
PS2 SFA was online, but someone told me that it actually wasn't...so this would make the
Xbox version the only one with any kind of online capability. Still wish Capcom would put
out an Alpha Anniversary disc that had Alpha 1-3 online for Live.

Well, now it's important to note that while I bash Capcom vs SNK 2 EO, it was Capcom's
*first* attempt at online gaming via Live. From what I hear of SFA, they've vastly
improved their coding/synching/whatever. It's weird, and I know I'll get some flack for
this, but it seems like ever since the MK team did so amazingly well with MK:D's online
component, everyone else finally got theirs right too(except Tecmo and their laggy-XXX
DOAU). I don't know if MS put out some new Live info to help optimize online play or
what...
Personally, I still wish Capcom would be Super Puzzle Fighter II X on Live....even though
I feel Puzzle Kombat is a better game.

Well, as much as I rag on the PW browsers on the Saturn and DC, it's still amazing
what they accomplished(especially on the Saturn with the 2 megs of ram only). I think
PW 3.0 was a purchased browser(like the last Saturn Netlink browser) so I never did
get to see it. I always wanted to check out the Japanese web browser that came on
certain discs, but never got a chance to do anything with that either. With the
iBook, nowadays I've pretty much just given up on using the DC or Saturn browsers for
anything other than getting game saves off the net, as I can just break out Netscape
7 and it looks fine on the TV.

About Tennis 2K2 though, you're right...it is damn good...one of the

Yeah, that's what happened with the Saturn Netlink browser. At first I
could still check my Hotmail, then the entire net seem to get further
and further out of the Netlink browsers reach. The DC version still does
alright, from what I remember...but it's been years since I've tried it
on the net.
