Author Dreamcast - Part 3...
BelPowerslave

2005-03-22, 3:40 am

PowerStone 2 - 4 player(simutaneously) sequel to PowerStone. Pretty fun stuff,
though it seems like things can get out of hand real quick even if you're paying
attention. Still, a lot of fun.

Propeller Arena - Disappointing leaked version of the full game. May have been
something online...but XXXX, offline it's boring like watching paint dry while
counting strands of carpet. Looks really pretty though. There was a rumor going
around that some guy wanted like $3k to leak the game, I *pray* that noone was
dumb enough to pay that...

Quake - Really cool conversion of PC Quake to the DC. Moves XXXXing quick, and
controls really well. Sadly, they've not found a way to get the music to play
correctly and that really kills a lot of the exp. for me...so I mostly look at
this as a novelty game.

Red Dog - Have played it a bit, and liked what I have seen. I remember this
being advertised on the side of the DC's box, but it came out a long while after
that, didn't it?

Resident Evil 2 - Bleemed upgrade of RE2. Looks really good, still plays like
RE(I'll let you decide if that's a good thing or not). I like it...as RE2 was a
good game, imo.

Sega Bass Fishing - Bought this and the fishing rod over at Comp USA when it was
on clearance(which was odd as the DC was still rockin' at that point). I hate
real fishing...hate getting up at the break of dawn, hate getting in a XXXXing
boat, hate the bugs, the smell of the water...and on top of it all, I HATE
seafood....so why would I like SBF? It's arcade fishing! You throw your line in,
you are almost guaranteed to catch something...and if not, you at least *see*
something. ;)

Sega Bass Fishing 2 - Disappointing sequel, reallly sucks imo. How they managed
to mess this up, I don't know...seems like all they would have had to do is
improve the graphics, maybe add a few more modes or something...instead it seems
like they XXXXed the control(even using the fishing rod, how in the HELL did
they manage that!?).

Sega Marine Fishing - Like the original SBF, it's arcade fishing...but this time
with REALLY big fish. You really have to fight those motherXXXXers to get them
into the boat. I really liked the virtual acquarium you could build based on
what you had seen and/or caught. Very cool game, and a nice contrast to SBF.

Sega Rally 2 - XXXXing A, what happened!? This had the potential to be an
excellent game, but instead is killed by shitty control and serious lack of any
sensation of speed. Ugh...

Shenmue - OMG, wake me when it's over. I'm sorry, I've tried and tried and tried
to get into this one...I just can't do it. I wouldn't mind watching the movie of
it that's dist. with Xbox Shenmue II...but that's about as far as I'll probably
go.

Silent Scope - A really good conversion of the arcade game. You know, I wasn't
sure how it'd play on a pad...without the bad-XXX sniper rifle and all, but it
does alright, I really still dig it. They added a few training courses to the
conversion, but that's about it. Wish that damn Silent Scope Complete on Xbox
would hurry up and drop to $25 or lower, would love to get it as I've never
played SS2 or 3 outside of GameWorks(before those little pussies pulled them out
of place because of all the videogame violence controversies).

Slave Zero - Bought it...it's still in shrinkwrap. I need to open this one
up...I played the demo some time ago, kind of dug it...so I'd be interested in
seeing how the full game is.

Soldier of Fortune - Solid conversion of the hardcore PC game. The graphics are
outstanding, and do an excellent job of holding up against its PC big brother.
All of the violence is still there, with heads being shot off, etc. A few small
things have been cut(no more dogs, or women terrorists, and there's a part of a
level that's just been deleted), but that's about it. The killer on this one are
the loads. Like DC Half-Life this game features "in-game" loading...but unlike
HL these loads are anywhere from 1 minute to 2 whole minutes! XXXXing A, if
they'd only do it once or twice a level, it wouldn't be too bad...but damn, it
does it 3 to 5 times per level! I'll admit that I am quite biased on this one, I
really love SoF, and before I had a PC this was my sole source of playing
it(aside from the girlfriend's PC) so I put up with it(plus, it's fun to do a
shot everytime you get to a load...you'll be piss drunk by the end of the first
level). ;)

Sonic Adventure - Love this game for multiple reasons...but one stands above
them all: It's one of the few games I can think of where the Japanese finally
got XXXXed up the XXX by a rushed release. The sweet, sweetness of knowing *we*,
the non-Japanese nations got the superior version. Take that you bastards, this
is for the millions of games we constantly get XXXXed over on while ya'll get
non-stop "L.E.'s", bonus discs, etc. ;)

Sonic Adventure 2 - Got this one from NCS, with the Birthday pack. Sadly, I've
gotta say I almost like the Birthday Pack more than this game. Don't get me
wrong, the Sonic and Shadow levels are bad-XXX, but what in the XXXX is with the
clones' Tails/Robotnic and Knuckles/Rogue's levels? Not only did they suck, but
you were pretty much playing the same shit with two different characters.

Space Channel 5 - I bought this for $5, new at Target...and I still question
why. I hate playing it...I HATE it. Now, putting it on Auto-play isn't too
bad...though that gets pretty old too. At least the holographic cover-thing is
kinda cool...

Spider-Man - Rather than just "bleeming it" the guys a Neversoft(I think that's
the dev) actually recoded and enhanced the graphics for this conversion. I don't
think they added anything new to the game, but it really didn't need it anyway.
Loved this on the PSX, even traded it in towards this version.

Star Wars: Episode I - Jedi Power Battles - Like Spider-Man, LucasArts did a
very good job of recoding and upgrading this one for the DC. The levels look
XXXXing great, WAY better than they did back on the PSX. I think the only thing
that was added to the DC version were a series of strange "hacks" you could
perform using the DC keyboard. For more thoughts(and some screenshots):

The 4th and final part of the DC list will be coming soon...

Yes, SBF2 is a sim, not an arcade game, and shouldn't have been named
SBF2. I hate SBF2. But SBF and SMF are incredible games. I actually have
TRU clearanced copies of the game to give to a friend of mine; I need to
get him a $15 DC, a fishing rod and one of my memory cards and he'll
give me his old Atari 5200...

I know it...it's one that I always had meant to pick up ever since I had
played a demo of it, but just never got around to it. I can't remember if
it's coming out on MAT v3 or not, but I still doubt it'll include the 4
player battle mode, so I'll definitely still get the DC version at some
point.

Get a save with the 70 man battle option unlocked. The fightin engine's
slick if nothing else.

Space Channel 5 is one of those games that would be more successful in a
society where music education is compulsory, rather than an expensive
add-on option. Remember the piano scale puzzle in Super Mario RPG? You
don't have to be able to carry a tune in order to solve that problem, but
you do have to have the basics of music theory in your head right there
next to the alphabet and the multiplication tables. In a similar way,
having that knowledge on tap is one of the reasons why I really enjoy
Space Channel 5 as a prime example of a rhythm and music game that doesn't
require a specialized controller (or any special physical skills.)

That's not to say anything against people who don't happen to enjoy the
game for any reason. You could be Todd-Freaking-Rundgren and still not
care for Space Channel 5, and that would be absolutely your right. But I
think that as an example of poor business decisions from Sega, this is one
case where they seriously overestimated the level of their consumer base.
Any other publisher would have correctly categorized this as a niche
title, and Sega boldly (and pretty blindly) expected the mainstream to
accept it. They do get points for chutzpah though.

I was always upset with the 'bad' ports to the dreamcast, so when once and
while
a good one where the developers actually put some time into it came along it
was
a cause for celebration. Another great port I thought was Soul Reaver, I
love that
game on the Dreamcast.

I didn't see too much of SR(past the demo on the various DC demo discs) but it
always looked kinda "Bleemed" to me...but then again, those textures looked
really good, so maybe not. I agree though, I really dig it when the dev. puts
some extra effort in and attempts to reprogram the game using the DC's
strengths.

SBF2. I hate SBF2. But SBF and SMF are incredible games. I actually have
TRU clearanced copies of the game to give to a friend of mine; I need to
get him a $15 DC, a fishing rod and one of my memory cards and he'll
give me his old Atari 5200...

Yes!!!! It's qurky, its fishing, its DC, its in the collection. :-)

Same as Bass fishing but Saltwater. It like ESPN2's "Spanish fly" or
Norm Issac's Big Game fishing being interactive without the seasickness.
Need to buy tha one, only played the arcade version.

Stop!!!! This is the best game for the DC. Shame on you. Booooooooo :-(
Yeah, its long, and requires a good holliday weekend to play. (
Thanksgiving & Xmas are borring times. Nothing on tv & everything
closed) The scope of what they did with a console game here make it a
legend in its self. A must Buy for all.

One of the best arcade games ever. Cheaper than going to the range. Not
the same with out the gun.. :-\
