"Headhunter" keeps resetting the DC?!
|
|

| I finally got Headhunter from Ebay, new and sealed. But now, when I want
to play it, it always resets the DC back to the boot logo. This doesn't
happen at the same places at the game, but rather random. Other games
seem to work 100% fine.
Has anyone an idea what might be going on here?

Hmmmmmmm, I guess the first question would be: Are you sure it's an
original(not a copy)?
If it's a copy, that's the problem right there...
How about 3rd part devices(VMU's, controllers, etc), any thing like that
plugged in?
Finally, how are the discs, their physical condition? Any scratches?

No, it's definitely an original. It was still sealed when I bought it.

Nothing, at the time I started the game I had only one controller with
rumblepack and vmu connected (all original Sega).

As I mentioned, I just opened the still sealed package, so the discs are
100%.

Hmmmmm, ok, next question: Is the DC in a relatively open space...enough that
the fan can blow hot air far enough out of and away from the machine? If the
DC is overheating, it's possible that it could be resetting(kind of like an
old PC of mine used to do).

This can't be software, I'd bet that wire in your DC just got loose at
the same time you got the game. It's a common issue. Try searching
Google for DC random resets, if you can't find a tutorial on how to fix
it, I'll see if I can find it later. It's easy to fix, btw.

I thought about that problem myself, I also found a tutorial about how
to fix it, but strangely all other games work. It's only when I play
Headhunter. Well, I'll try cleaning the lens first, if this doesn't
help, I'll have to try out the other fix. I could also try to
recalibrate the laser when opening the console, since "Alone In The
Dark" won't boot any more... Thanks!

You could put 2 other Dreamcasts in the space it has. As I mentioned in
another post, I'll try cleaning the lens now, and if this doesn't help,
I'll have to open the DC and try the other fixes I found in the net.
Thanks a lot!

Nope, VGA-box. But I just had to find out that it isn't a problem only
caused by "Headhunter". It also occured with "Super Runabout" some
minutes ago. So, it seems as if the DC is broken
Gonna try the reset fix I found tomorrow
(http://consolevision.com/members/fa..._resetfix.shtml).
Thanks for all your help guys!

You might also try making sure that no other devices are hooked up,
including other controllers, VMUs and rumble packs. If that stops it,
then start adding things back in and see which one is causing it. I
vaguely remember some games resetting when 3rd party MUs were being
used, but I might be making that up....

Yeah, that's going to be it then. It's an easy fix really. There's not
any need to use hot glue or anything like that, in case the tutorial
recommends it. Just pushing the wire down does the trick in most cases.

It did the trick pretty good. Not a single reset since I "fixed" it! :D
I also noticed the the internal layout of the DC is very modular and
easy to dis-/assemble. So if anything breaks again, I just have to
replace the broken part, not the whole console. Great piece of work!

Excellent! That's the DC's only common issue, so barring CDR's burning
out your (easily replaced) GD-ROM drive, you shouldn't see any problems.
I had the wierdest problem once with an 8/9/99 manufactured DC
resetting *only* when Skies of Arcadia was played for 30 minutes or
more, we ended up just trading it in, the reset fix didn't work for that
one.
Now, it's too bad my dead SNES isn't as easily fixed. I swear, I know
my Brother-in-law hardly played it, and I've hardly played it, and the
friggin thing's just dead......

Well, since it's dead...have you tried banging it on the ground a little bit? I
know that sounds awful, but man, sometimes it works. ;)

The way I was just slamming Starfox in and out of the cartridge port,
I'm sure it got all the jostling it could possibly get. I'll try
dropping it and see what happens. ;)

| I've got a SNES sitting here that looks like it was thrown from a 5 story
building. It's just pitiful. I got it in a huge lot of NES stuff.
I got a bunch of universal adapters and RF units in this week so decided to go
ahead and test it before chucking it out. Damn thing worked on the first try
with no cleaning (also looks like it was dug out of a land fill).
I was amazed....and it's new owner will be too once I clean her up and sell it
