Woah!! The PS3 (60Gb) was orginally a whopping $659 dollars but SONY
has gone ahead and actually RAISED the price of the PS3 to $699.99. A
$40 dollar increase is RIDICULOUS!!!! With taxes it's $796 dollars. The
$40 increase has taken effect everywhere in Canada.

Way to go SONY, crash and burn...crash and burn..

I think if the price was raised in Canada this would make
headlines..... Most likely this specific on-line retailer has raised
the price.

Nope, Best Buy Canada also raised their price. Futureshop and Best Buy
are the biggest electronic retailers in Canada

I wonder if there's an underlying issue about a raised import duty that
effects the PS3 (maybe along the lines of the high power appliance tax
in either the UK or EU that's about to take effect, or did so recently).

Just Best Buy/Future Shop is screwing Canada. The Source has it for 659
and so does Sony's site.

What can be said.... we've been talking about it for a few months now.
You can't take a $300+ loss on hardware for long, Sony should have
never included a BluRay player. But since they included a BluRay player
they should have at least broken even on manufacturing cost. I don't
think a lot of people really grasp what Sony is doing with each PS3
sale. At break even you're giving away your product, at a $300+ loss,
you're selling out your company and you're giving away your product.
Only a moron would do this.

But here's the thing, even taking the $300+ hit, consumers aren't
biting, so what choice does Sony have, the announced price in Europe
and this price hike in Canada are just two examples of Sony's action. I
expect something similar will happen in the US, that is before the PS3
hits the clearance rack somewhere early-mid 2008.

In all fairness, $699.99 CDN at the current exchange rate of
1.1796:1 works out to $593.41 USD, or pretty close to the US list price.

And the fact that your Money in Canada isn't worth the pretty
multi-colored paper it is printed on has nothing to do with this
retailer taking advantage of people who really want one, which I believe
they are not...simple economics, we know you need to look that word up
in Canada. If they are so expensive, why are they SOLD OUT? I assume
that you are blaming Sony for all the people who bought one and turned
around and made $300 - $500 over retail for the units on E Bay as
well....While we are at it, we should blame Sony for the fact that you
pay so much for Gasoline (by the Liter at that)

Our dollar is worth about 85 cents U.S., I'd say that's worth something. Oh
and here's a little graph of the last 5 years of exchange rates between
U.S./Can...

I find this is the typical and ignorant comment I find Americans
always make concerning the CAD currency compared to theirs these days
when for the longest time now, it's been right around the 85 cents on
the USD. They're absolutely oblivious and clueless when it comes to
realizing just how much the USD has been devalued around the world
over the last 5 years.

It's amazing how even though their USD's been in the shitcan since
shortly after Bush decided to invade Iraq, the Americans still think
it's still the "almight mighty dollar". The ironic thing is, the
forex traders at the most prestigious trading houses on Wall Street,
such as Solomon Brothers and Goldman Sachs are shorting the USD by the
millions, while the rest of America goes on thinking...well, goes on
thinking like this joker. tsk, tsk....

Umm, moron, Canadian money is worth a LOT. Wish I had paid 10k for 16k
a few years ago and be changing it back now.

Canadian money used to seem like play. No longer. Our currency is in
the crapper.

Get a clue moron. It is the U.S. dollar that hasn't been worth much
over the last 5 years. The Canadian dollar is far stronger against the
U.S. and on the international market.

You are the one that needs a lesson in simple economics. Next time
know your facts before you spout off obvious inaccuracies.

Maybe this is Bizzaro Sony. Raising the price is actually a GOOD thing!
Likewise, having no games makes PS3 the most brilliant console in history!

PS3 is bad, and by bad, I mean good!

Sony's gamble with Blu-ray in the PS3 was to "buy" dominance the HD video
market by getting people to choose the PS3 over HD-DVD players.

On the one hand, you could argue it's working... There are now more
"Blu-ray capable" devices in the wild than HD-DVD ones. Of course, not
everyone who bought a PS3 is using it for blu-ray movies - or worse still
- is ignoring HD-DVD.

On top of that, even the majority of the AV-phile market is ignoring HD
movies right now due to the media war, high prices, and small libraries.
Even then, the boost from an upscaled DVD on a HDTV to a HD movie on HDTV
isn't nearly the "Oh My God!" reaction folks got going from VHS to DVD on
their old TV.

If Sony raises their prices in the US, they might as well throw in the
towel. Seriously. If no one's buying the PS3 NOW at $600, what makes
Sony think they'll get get more sales if they raised the price?

Seriously, if Sony wants to sell PS3s, they're going to have to do
something like throw in 3 Blu-Ray movies and a game (NOT Resistance...)
and keep the price the same (if not drop it $100.) Giving them away? You
bet. But Sony has to do something NOW to get the sales up and convince
the developers to stay on board for the PS3. Otherwise, a game console
with no games and no hope for games later on isn't going to sell whatever
the price is.
