"65nm CELL processor production started
Added on 30/01/2007.

Sony Computer Entertainment has started production on the previously
announced 65nm CELL processor. All PlayStation 3 units so far have a
90nm processor inside, but this will change soon. As it seems Sony has
started the massproduction of the 65nm processor, and this will have a
few advantages.

First of all, this will mean a price cut for Sony on every PlayStation
3 sold. This is because the 65nm CELL processor is cheaper than the
90nm processor.

And second, this means a heatreduction for the PlayStation 3.

Also this 'new' processor is not only for the PlayStation 3, it's will
also be used for more Sony or Toshiba products.

Whether this new 65nm processor will be in all PlayStation 3 units at
the European launch is unknown. We expect Sony to announce this in the
coming months. Don't expect a price drop though, because Sony will
still lose a lot of money with this 'new' processor."

all it means is the CELL Processor for PS3 will be smaller, more
efficient in use of electricity, cooler, require less cooling, more
reliable, etc. it won't make PS3's with it more powerful. this is
natural development / refining / shrinking of the same technology. And
PRICE CUT will be more likely. lets see if Microsoft can get 65nm
Xenon CPUs into Xbox 360 out before Sony has 65nm CELL PS3s.

The Xenon chip in the XBox 360 is a triple-core design by the same
vendor that created the cell processor for Sony as well as the Wii's
processor, that vendor is IBM. The lower nm on the process just means
that it will be more power conservative, it doesn't mean that it will
be more stable, the processor architecture is already stable or it
wouldn't be in production if it weren't. I guess you could say since
it runs cooler it's more stable, but I assume Sony has equipted
current PS3 models with proper cooling support, so I still say the new
process isn't any more stable than the new one. Also, 65nm doesn't
translate into a lower production cost necessarily, if it does that
will help Sony, but they won't lower the cost.

You will not get a PS3 price drop anytime soon, Sony has already
stated that you will not see a PS3 price drop in at least three years.
In fact as you can see in Canada and Europe they are raising the
price, why start rumors? Especially rumors that can easily be
disproven.

You can't compare the cell processor in the PS3 directly to the XBox
360 because these modern consoles power is a sum of all their parts.
Sony put exclusive focus on their cell processor and added a graphics
processor (GPU) almost as an afterthought, while Microsoft made the
GPU a more balanced part of the architecture of the 360 from the
start.

The end result is on paper the PS3 is a bit more powerful, but in
reality developers can't harness all of that power to build a 360-
killer app, that will not happen. In fact the reverse has been true so
far and that trend may continue. It's why you're already seeing with a
lot of these cross platform PS3, 360 titles, the 360 version actually
look better. Software developer with the intimate details on both
systems have confirmed, in fact some of them are so disgusted with
Sony's poor architecture decisions they are ranting to the press
(first time this has ever happened).

That's the reality so far, this article means little....
