To compete better against Wii, SCE's president has accounted that PS3 price
has been dropped to 49980yen from 92790yen. Also 20GB PS3 will also have
HDMI for full HD Support just like 60GB version.

yes, and it is only going to happen in Japan, no price drop has been
announced or considered for the states or Europe. So there's another
no shit sherlock moment from Sony.

So for those of us who know nothing... As things stand now, what is the
difference in features and cost between the low and high end PS3s in
Japan? (as I have no doubt that the price reduction and HDMI support
will also happen here in the US)

I think the remaining differences will be:

* 60GB HDD vs. 20GB
* Wireless controller vs. wired controller
* Built-in media reader ("7-in-1" type reader for images)

I think that's about it.

Adding HDMI to the low-end model means that the real only difference is in
the accessories - things you can buy yourself to augment your base 360.

I guess you meant PS3
Sounds like I'm getting the low end system.

No, whatever the price is in Japan is the price it will be in the US.
They are not allowed to sell it for a jacked up price in one place and
a discounted rate in another.

It's a XXXXing law, my history teacher told me.

Says who?

You do know that many items sell for different prices around the world,
right? Look at the UK - games and such cost almost 2x what they do in the
US.
