Once upon a time, I had Disgaea, and made it about 1/3rd the way through,
before I got distracted by other games.

I leant to my brother, figuring he'd get a kick out of it.

Well, that was about 2 years ago. He's still hacking away on it (baby
daughter doesn't leave much gaming time...)

I see Disgaea2 has been released.

Questions for those who have played both:

1: Do you need to have finished Disgaea to enjoy Disgaea2?

2: Do you get any extra goodies for having a Disgaea savefile?

I'm usually loathe to buy games at full price, but for long-lived titles
like this, I can make exceptions.

No. (Like most games, actually. Otherwise they would be limiting the
audience)

Some of the characers from the first show up, and a couple more are
unlockable as secret characters

Plus, they actually go up in value. At least the first one did.

Until recently....
http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStati...ss/Product.html

Not sure why - maybe its a rerun of the game in anticipation to the run up
of the sequel. Mainly distributed by Play though.

They did a similar thing with Tales Of Symphonia, a game unobtainable for a
year or more and then Play suddenly had quantities of it. Not sure if they
store it for a year or more or get the publisher to do a run for them or go
to Australia and get their PAL copies in bulk.

Pretty lucky. Prices on Amazon for the game range from $173 to $300(!!!)
Locally, I've seen the game still going for $50 new.

At that rate, I'd be better off buying 2 copies. Play one, and put the
other up for sale later on for big $$$.

Atlus did a reprint, actually. But chances are pretty good that will sell
out, too, and the price will go back up. (This is either the 2nd or 3rd
reprint they've done)

One other question: How does 2 compare with the original (better,
worse, or same)? If I manage to find a copy of 1 for sale (assuming I
don't want to eventually have both), which should I get? (obviously if
I want both, I should get 1 first, since it is so much harder to find)

The story is much better in the original, which is one of the funniest games
I've every played. And weirdest. The 2nd the story is not so good, and most
of the jokes have fallen flat, I've thought. It's also kinda predictable.

However, the second has the same gameplay of the first, but with a lot of
extra stuff added. So that part of the game is probably better, although if
you don't like doing extra stuff, then you might not notice. The Disgaea
series is one of those where you can play as much as you want - it's got a
ton of extra stuff, some you have to play for insane amounts of time to get
to (but the regular portions of the game can be beaten in a reasonable
amount of time).

Thanks. Since I value the story highly, and only rarely look at putting
in insane amounts of time for extras, it looks like I should get 1
first, if possible, but I won't be disappointed with 2 if I can't find
1.
