PS3 shipments to be halved?

| As the Sony Fanbitches cry about how XBOX sales appear to have 'fallen'
when they refuse to take into account that ITS THE SUMMER and ITS 3x
MORE EXPENSIVE THANT HE PS2, Sony will have to halve the number of PS3s
shipped to just 2 million WORLDWIDE by year end.
Echoes of the shortages plauging the XBOX 360 launch, lampooned by
Blog Mirkin, who was ever-so confident about a PS3 landing in his hands
this spring....

Target shipment of Sony PS3 may be halved
Yen-ting Chen, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 30 August
2006]
Sony's target shipment volume of four million PlayStation 3 (PS3)
consoles by the end of this year is likely to be cut to two million
units because volume production is not set yet, according to sources in
Taiwan's game console manufacturing industry.
President and CEO Kaz Hirai of Sony Computer Entertainment America,
recently said that Sony is on schedule to deliver two million PS3
consoles in November, another two million in December, and additional
two million by March 31, 2007, the sources indicated. However, Sony's
OEM makers in China and Japan are still preparing for volume production
of the PS3 and there is a short supply of blue laser diodes, a key
component of Blu-ray Disc (BD) pick-up heads, and cell processors, the
sources pointed out, noting that the situation may halve the total
expected shipment volume for November and December.
The Taipei branch of Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong declined to
comment on the report.

Shouldn't be too hard for you to get lost.

| Yeah, a rep from mitsubishi said something like this recently too. But
I am sure sony will continue to trumpet "4 million shipped by the end
of 2006" until next year. They have to find something to hype, since
the "PS3 will replace your computer" nonesense did not work. I wonder
when will they start mass producing PS3s? Time is definitely running
out on them...

| Have we reached the point where shortages are faked due to the extreme
amount of free advertising & hype that result when people have a hard time
finding the latest console ? Food for thought....

I don't care, I'll buy my PS3 in about a year from now, hopefully after
the first price reduction

No....the HDMI 1.3 chip is not entering production until October. There
are many companies not able to get their hands on it. Panasonic, for
example, were initially gonna launch their Blu-Ray player with HDMI 1.3
but have decided to downscale rather than delay their player. If, as
seems likely, the PS3 does not enter production until October then
there's now way they'll be able to meet demand at launch.

| They could have launched with 10 million consoles and they would not
have met demand at launch. This just means it'll take them an extra 6
months to catch up with the initial demand.
Shortages suck. But I'm sorely tempted to camp out the day before just
so I can eBay the thing.

which newsgroup would you like me to get lost from? I won't do it but
it's fun to know. Oh, sorry, just noticed the troll xposted to ps3
group too which I am not a member of.

Even so, a shortage does have it's favourable components when it comes to
free promotion, something which is likely not lost on Sony's marketing
people. When a console easily meets demand it's almost boring & people may
be slower to buy when they know it's readily available.

Generally I would agree.....if it's a summer or spring launch. But if
it's a Christmas launch when your two competitors are readily available,
I'm not so sure. I can see lots of people going out to buy it as a
present only to be told that they wont be available until around
February. Any decent sales assistant will then draw their attention to
both the 360 and the Wii both of which they can purchase for the price
of a PS3. I'm also not sure how well a $599 console will sell in February.

More likely, it means sorny will only ship the "cheap" $500 version with no
HDMI.
