I've had a lot fun with this game, including playing 2 player battle
with my son. However, he has discovered that he can get around the
track pretty fast by riding the guard rails or hitting the wall to slow
down. To me this spoils it completely, like bowling with bumpers in the
gutters.

Is there a way to increase the penalty for crashing?

If not, is there another game just as good, but with more of a penalty
for crashing? Also I'm annoyed that only two different road tracks are
available for head-to-head racing, and that there are no AI cars in the
head-to-head races.

You could probably do with something like the Need For Speed games.

I don't know how much they're charging for need for speed underground
or need for speed underground 2 but you may be able to get them for
bargain prices as they were superseded by Need for speed most wanted.

underground two has more options on which cars you can drive during
the races on split screen, and Most Wanted is the same, you can
choose cars which have been customized by you during normal gameplay
etc.

If you haven't played these games the main game is fun anyway, the two
underground games are played on wet night tracks and Most wanted is
daytime. It's all challenges etc, most wanted includes some police
challenges too in single player. There's traffic, which i think is
adjustable in two player and as they're played in towns and motorways
etc there are always small obstacles, like wall ends, corners of
buildings, which if your son tries to ride the wall he will hit. Far
too much to go into here, but underground 2 has a massive amount of
upgrades, physical and looks wise, which can be done to the cars in
single play, a little like pimp my ride with muscle and in two player
mode you can choose between 4 different race types, I think, like drag
racing, point to point sprint racing, circuit racing and something
else i can't recall. You can choose to drive cars from your stock of
upgraded models, standard cars etc so you can make things easier or
harder for each other and I think there may be a catch up option which
can be switched on and off.

Oh heck far too much to go into here, but personally I'd go for
underground 2 or Most wanted as i enjoy the games as single player and
they're a blast. =

I don't know where you are but in britain play.com have most wanted
and underground 2 at =A317.99 each brand new, I guess they could b e
pretty cheap elsewhere too

Sounds like you just aren't very good at it ;-)
Yes, the crash-racing is a concession to play vs reality, but it is
still faster to play it clean. It just takes a lot of practice.

Only 2 road courses for h2h racing?? That doesn't sound right. You
might have to unlock the courses first. IIRC all courses are
available.

Enthusia is probably less forgiving of crash tactics. And can be
found cheap (IF you can find it). It is also perhaps more realistic
and harder to learn. And it isn't as pretty.

IIRC you can in the Options menu somewhere under 2 player battle.

An easier option is to just pick a track without guardrails. Especially if
the track has sand pits. Try the Suzuka Circuit, Grand Valley or Twin Ring
Motegi tracks.

I think you need to play the GT mode some more. As you play, more tracks
are opened up for arcade mode. No AI cars, but then, they just get in the
way normally anyway.
