I could see if you were complaining about 06 servers but c'mon, 05. I

Exactly. I can see wanting to stretch your $50, but you can't expect a
company to keep supporting it past 2 years. That is unrealistic.

But that's giving a point to PC games, you can still go ahead and play
Quake 1 online with lots of people if you want. Just sayin...

Quake isn't a game that gets a new version annually. Also, how many people
are still playing the "original" Quake? If it weren't for mods and things
like that, no one would still being playing the original version.

Quake is also a bad example because you can run a server of your own if
you want.
A better example would be Diablo2. The servers are still operated by the
company. Although, as with Quake, there aren't annual releases, nor even
a Diablo3.

Which is without a doubt the greatest travesty in gaming. I would be
hard-pressed to find an online game that I had as much fun with as the
Diablo series back in the day. Doggonit Doug, I had forgotten how much I
missed that game until that last comment.

True, but then it's still giving a point to PC gaming, as most PC games
allow players to run their own computers as servers, without needing
the company to do a thing. I don't think we're far from that point
with the next gen, I mean, both Xbox360 and PS3 have broadband and hard
drives so, what's stopping games from allowing consoles to serve as
'hosts'. Maybe it's just that, in the case of EA, they're using it as
a another hook to keep players buying the newer versions.

I would guess it's the console developers. There is nothing in the
hardware that would prevent one user connecting directly to another;
but it is limited by the online service, which in the case of XBox is
XBox live. I would guess that MS doesn't really want users to be able
to connect to each other directly for many reasons. First is it would
reduce profits from Live. Second (and probably more importantly), it
would open a whole new can of worms for MS. They would have to worry
about viruses. They would also have to worry about people finding ways
to trade copyrighted material (whether it be games or other media).
Then the games would have to support this sort of connection.
Sure it maybe "giving a point" to PC gaming, but is that really going
to be a big hit??? PC games have always had certain advantages over
consoles; and consoles have always had certain advantages over PC's.
In general, PC gaming has allowed greater flexibility; while console
gaming has allowed for less headaches,a more consistent experience, and
has usually been somewhat cheaper.

.... Until now
I dunno, $600 for a PS3 and each game costing $70, and on top of that,
a "Live" connection of what, $50 a year is it?
In a period of 4 years, let's say I buy a game every 2 months:
PS3: $600 + $70*24 + $50*4 = $2480
PC: $700 + $50*24 + $0*4 = $1900
.... is it really cheaper? I'm not so sure anymore

The fact you host your own games is the point. you should always be able to
do that. The company can have official servers, but you should be albe to
host your own anytime you want.

If "most" people owned a T1 line or higher I would agree with you.
Most multiplayer games play like XXX if hosted on DSL or cable

correction.
multiplayer games like quake/doom/diablo type games.
not 1 on 1 sports titles

Why not?
Atleast hosting a single game from a console shouldn't a problem. I've
done it with StarWars BattleFront II.
But I did notice a slowdown when there were a lot of ships on the
screen during a space battle. Most of the time it worked very well.
We were only playing with two PS2s on a LAN, though.
Ideally, companies releasing a stand alone server is the best option,
though. Sure it requires a PC, but it doesn't slowdown the host's game
console.
If you want to play with people over the Internet, as apposed to a LAN,
the company should still provide a dedicated server. So that way you
can either host it yourself, or on a rented server.
The bulk of the server code is already written, so it shouldn't be hard
to port it to a stand alone server. If they've written it well, it
shouldn't take very long at all.
I've never played any of these sports games that get a "new" version
each year. But as someone else mentioned, it seems like EA is out to
get they "loyal customers" to keep paying them $50 each year for each
game, now forcing them to move on by shutting down the old servers.
If someone is really concerned they can take a page from BNetD and
write your own server to emulate the "official" one. Just don't end up
the same way they did...

I played some of the demo. Seems very Diablo 2 ish, but the complaints I
saw were that it was not much more than a Diablo 2 clone and had the same
issues.
