Here is some information on the psx controller, which I understand is
quite similar. Other than the size of the controller, I'm not sure if
anything else is different.

There is a little encapsulated controller IC that is the heart of the
controller that you can't get at. Otherwise, it is just a wiring
diagram of switches, potentiometers, a couple capacitors and motors
that go into this interface IC and then goes out to the cable. If it
isn't mechanical, like dirty contacts, and that little controller IC
has taken an electrical hit, there isn't any way to repair the
controller. There might be some surplus places that sell that mainboard
but there are 4 ribbon cables and two sets of motor wires making the
effort not really cost effective considering a new controller for
retail is less than $25. There are copy-cat dual shock controllers for
as low as $6 but they can be pretty crappy feeling compared to a Dual
Shock.
