PS2 Controller nonfunctional

| I obtained two controllers at a local yard sale.
The analog light comes on when they are plugged in.
The start button works, but none of the other buttons.
In a game, characters seem to go up and right by themselves.
Any way to fix this?

You can take them apart and clean them, wipe the surfaces of the
connection areas with something to get off any sticky gunge, but there
could be damage in the sticks, which is something else entirely. The
shaft of the sticks can also get damaged and a groove wears into them,
so when you push in one direction the groove catches on the edge of
the controller opening. You may be able to think of some way to repair
this sort of damage but I don't think there's a way to repair sticks
which are broken internally.
If you do take the pads apart take careful note of what goes where and
when re-assembling watch for bits getting caught in gaps etc,
specially the two flimsy bits which go into the shoulder button area.
I find the ps2 pads a pain the arse to clean inside.
