Considering the PSP screen resolution is much smaller it would never
run in high def anyway. Heck, at 480x272 it's not even up to broadcast
TV quality (720x486).

Absolutely correct. Which is why I like the PSP and don't like the PS2.
I expect more from my consoles than the PS2 delivers, while the PSP
absolutely blows away any hand-held expectation I might have had from
the GB/GBA days.
