I just bought and installed this product from mod-monster:

http://www.modmonster.com/index.asp...WPROD&ProdID=75

(PS2 Flip-top cover with start magic 3.6). This is in order to play a
Japanese import called Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, which I bought from
Lik-Sang.

The installation worked fine in that I can still play US games.
However, when I boot the disk labeled "Magic 3 Plus CD-ROM Driver", and
then insert Final Mix, I get no response from the controller, and
eventually I see "Invalid PS2 Disk" on the screen.

Pretty disappointing - any advice?

Sorry, I mean swapmagic, not startmagic.

Is your import a CD-ROM game? If it is, in fact, a DVD-ROM game, boot
with the Swap Magic DVD disc.

Good call, Grinder, you are right that it's a DVD. I booted up the DVD
disk and unfortunatley still had the same problem.

I think now that it's something mechanical. I'm finding that it takes
me about 10 tries to get *any* disk to boot (i.e. even a regular US
game). Has anyone seen this? I'll call mod monster to see what they
say, but I'm worried that my PS2 got damaged somehow. It's hard to see
how - it was such a simple installation - basically I just removed the
old top and put on the new one.

Unfortunately, those symptoms sound like a failing laser assembly.
Maybe you just got a bit of dust on it while making the flip-top
install? Find yourself an online guide to cleaning the lens, and cross
your fingers.
