I use the optical output, and have enabled it in the system menu. I get
stereo sound, but no surround. This apply for all games and movies. In
the games and movies I choose 5.1 Dolby digital or Dolby surround, but
it doesn’t help. It is nothing wrong with the cable or the surround
receiver, have tested it with a DVD player, and no problem with the
surround sound on the DVD player. Any ideas?

IIRC you have to turn it on in the DVD setup menu too.
(put a movie in and press select)

Thank you, that helped for the movies, but in the games I still only get
stereo. I choose Surround from the game menu, but for some reasons I
only get stereo.

Are you sure that your games have surround sound? Most don't. A few (like
Metal Gear Solid) only support surround sound in cutscenes. You might have
to "force" the receiver into surround mode. I've heard varying levels of
success with the auto-detection in receivers.

You need a reciever that supports Pro Logic II to get true surround
sound in most PS2 video games. You also need to select PLII from the
sound options menu in the game.

People always get this wrong.

PLII is 4.1/5.1 if it has been Encoded first!
DTS is also used in-game for a few PS2 games. This is a 4.1 setting but
offers better sound than DD5.1 has the bitrate is usually higher.

Firefighter FD 18 is DD5.1 IN-GAME.

My receiver supports Pro Logic II, and I also choose Pro Logic II or
surround in the games. When I see a movie, my receiver automatic detects
what signal it is (DTS, Dolby Digital or Pro Logic II), and the correct
icon appears on the receiver, and the surround sound is turned on. But
in games nothing happens. Off course I can manually set my receiver to
Pro Logic II mode, but then it is not true surround, only fake surround
from stereo signals.

You may need to tell your PS2, in the 'configuration settings' menu not
the DVD menu, whether or not you are using an optical connector. You do
this by turning on the PS2 without a disk in the drive and selecting the
configurations setting in the browser menu.

I have done that. But in the menu I can only choose on or off, not
surround.

That is really odd. I get surround sound when I use GT4 and I know it
works on my reciever.
