New PS2 Owner [questions]

| Fabala the Green 2005-02-12, 1:52 pm |
| Well, after I buy one I will be.
Just a few questions.... if anyonje feels like answering them
I've seen PS2 in pictures, only leaning on it's side...so it can't lay
flat at all? Why is that?
what's the best surface to put it on?
is a vertical stand necessary?
What is the best way to care for Ps2 to ensure longevity?
Thanks in advance

no, I think they show it on its side to show that it can do that, but
it sits quite nicely horizontally and some people say having it on its
side (end) can hard discs

any flat surface. the new slimline machine is a top loader and gets
quite warm so you need a fair bit of ventilation, but it has a small
footprint

keep it clean. If it's the new one you'll be able to clean the eye
with a cotton bud, the old one needs a disc cleaner. Nobody can
guarantee how long either machine will last, but do beware trailing
wires/joypads as obviously they can be tripped over and the machine
could be sent flying

Those are just pictures taken so the console looks better. The PS2 can be
put both verticaly and horizontaly. It's all up to and how you put it.

Practically anything,I have a separate mini-desk that has the console on
top and games and acessories in it.And two game racks on the side.

Nope.
Have fun playing on the best console out there!

can hard discs? sorry didn't quite understand that.
flat surface like a table then? I've heard putting it on carpet kills
it, is that true?
So.. to keep this straightm, The older machines can lay flat down
without problems?
because that's the one i'll be getting, I've not heard good things
about the Slim from people who've used them [including a game store
owner]
what sort of disc cleaner do I need?
would it be wise to invest in a wireless controller then? are they
expensive?
Thanks again

Sorry, tired, 11.35 pm here... should have read 'harm' :O)

I suppose it depends on circumstance, but why risk it? Even a small
board under it if it's on the floor is better than carpet.

both can and do

I have both, my older one is on its last legs but the new one is still
causing me concern. I'm not sure about the amount of heat coming from
it and the main game I play (San Andreas) has shown a flew problems
with sound and stuff which I'm not sure if they're the machine or the
game.
quote:

as it's a dvd player then really a dvd cleaner would be appropriate
but I guess a cd cleaner would work too.

My son likes these but I just use normal ones. I can't advise on them
as I don't own one myself, sorry. My main problem is with buttons
sticking down, so one good bit of advice is to keep your hands clean
when using those pads.

| He meant harm discs. I've also heard of some people complaining that discs
would get scratched if the PS2 was stood up vertically. I've never seen
this first hand though so take it with a grain of salt. Personally, I leave
the PS2 sitting horrizontally. The vertical stand has always been a gimic
and I've never trusted it's stability.

I did mean to mention that the new one (which would need a new design
of stand) has the nice centre spindle which kind of locks the disc in
place. Good for keeping it stable, bad for getting little scratches on
the disc and makes me very nervous about putting discs in or removing
them.

:O) I just have bad hands. The area where I keep the little bugger is
also pretty dark, my son couldn't even see the machine when I first
got it!

The reasoning for not placing on carpet or rugs is due mainly to static
electricity and potential problems from that...

The shop I got it from told me not to play for more than 5 hours, due to the
heating problem. I thought this is odd, but I won't risk not heeding the
warning. Little did I know that 5 hours could pass so quickly! Here in the
tropics my room temperature rarely goes below 26 celsius so I think I'd be
careful. The vert stand will improve ventilation, so I may get one soon.

Speaking of which, how much would it cost to cover my playstation and
controllers in titanium steel alloy instead of the plain plastic they are
covered in now? Just curious, prob wouldnt do it since it is likely to be
expensive. Would be cool though ;p.

I have heard rumours of a fan, or did i say that already? (I'm not
good today) but I'd hate to order one and find it was for the old
machine

October 1998? Didn't PS2 launch in late 2000(Japan)?

You can use the PS2 either in its horizontal or vertical orientation. If
you want to stand it up vertically, it is suggested you use a stand to
keep it from falling over (bad!).
quote:
> what's the best surface to put it on?
Not carpeting. Carpetting keeps air from circulating underneath, and
could block the fan outlets. If you must set it on your floor, try
putting it on a piece of wood, a hard cover book, etc. A table top is
good.
quote:
> is a vertical stand necessary?
Only if you want to stand it on its end. Otherwise, no.
quote:
> What is the best way to care for Ps2 to ensure longevity?
Try to keep it in a fairly well-ventilated, clean environment. Make sure
the ventilation ports aren't blocked while it's in use (again, carpet is
bad) and make sure the fan port is free of dust. Put it into standby mode
when you're done playing, and turn it off altogether before you unplug it
from the wall, or if you're not going to play for an extended period of
time.
Otherwise, it shouldn't give you any problems.

After 50 something swaps, you will know exactly where to put it in 1 shot.
I have no trouble having the slim version on a stand. I think the data
surface actually touch less than when you have a tray loading in the fat
version.
