How much of a time suck is Disgaea?

| I know it *can* last hundreds of hours, but is that long it HAS to
last? Reason I ask is because I'm a huge strategy RPG fan. However, I
got into strategy RPGs first starting with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
(I know, late to the game), then Fire Emblem, then Tactics Ogre all for
the Gameboy Advance. I owned a PS2 once and played some La Pucelle
Tactics on it and liked it, but found I didn't have enough time to get
deep into it. Now with the news that there's going to be a Disgaea 2 I'm
REALLY tempted to go pick up a copy of Disgaea, while it's still
possible to get one at my local game store, and then when I have the
money in 2 weeks get a PS2. I'd love to finally play Disgaea. I'd love
to play Disgaea 2 this summer. And there are a couple other games like
Katamari that I'm interested in.
But I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. If Disgaea 1 will
require me to invest hundreds of hours, then I may not ever get through
it as (and this is the reason I've been through strategy games on the
GBA multiple times per game) I generally don't have much time to play
console games. Maybe an hour a day. So I wouldn't want to buy it if I
ould be impossible to make progress without playing more often. Any
thoughts?

I'd recommend Front Mission 4 or Gladius if you are looking for solid
strategy-RPG games that aren't as time-consuming as Disgaea; they're both on
the cheap rack now, and very engaging games.

I've played Gladius. I found it okay, personally. I want something fresh
and new.
