PS3 LOSING DEV FANS IN JAPAN?

If latest mag reports are anything to go by, dev kit fear and loathing
inside.

14:01 Reports from Japanese Economy mag 'Weekly Diamond' have stated
that Japanese developers are unhappy with PS3 development tools at
present, making their titles likely to launch later than projected.

This seems to build upon previous concerns that the machine has not
been designed to meet the needs of developers, unlike Microsoft's Xbox
360 which has trumpeted it's developer-friendly credential from the
off.

Described by anonymous development sources as 'a cross between N64 and
PS2', referring to the difficulty in creating games for both these
platforms, the difficulty seems squarely blamed on the PS3's Cell chip
architecture and the resulting need for better-thought out version
control tools for coding teams. We'd pretend we know what this means,
but we don't.

Also problems of an unknown price point - currently tipped at around
$400 - means developers and publishers are also uncertain of their
target audience. President of Enterbrain, Hirokazu Hamamura, commented,
"We are unlikely to see games exhibiting a level only PS3 can achieve
until the end of 2007."

Hmmm... We think he's being optimistic as it was only last year we
started seeing things visually close to the PS2 tech demos shown
several years ago.

I find it odd that people didn't fully expect the PS3 to be harder to
develop for considering it's a new Cell chip and that MS has more than a
few years of software development under it's belt.

Surely the software development tools for the PS3 will improve over time?

How this next-gen console battle will pan out is hard to predict but the
way I see it:-

MS get's the headstart via an earlier launch and hopes that the easy of
development of games can put a good few titles on the shop shelves and
help shift more Xbox360 units. That coupled with the well established
Xbox Live service and the two reasonable price points of the unit.

Sony have the more feature rich hardware what with the Blu-ray drive,
the higher definition resolution, blue tooth etc etc. But more
importantly, they have the massive PS2 userbase.

I have both a PS2 and an Xbox, I've pre-ordered an XBox360 and I'll do
the same when the PS3 becomes available in June (a friend involved in
Blu-ray development tell's me it will launch before then but not
actually ship in volume till June - take that with a pinch of salt
though before you waste time flaming).

I'm guessing that most people with an Xbox will want an Xbox360 and most
people with a PS2 will want a PS3, people with both will want both. It
all comes down to how many PS2 owners MS can convert via the launching
of exceptional games before people have the actual choice between the
two systems. Within 6 - 8 months of the PS3 being available most games
will launch side by side on each console with the exception of exclusive
titles. Do games exclusive to a certain console sway a lot of peoples
purchases? They probably do but not in massive volumes.

So that brings me to development. Regardless of how hard it is to
develop games for a console, if the user base exists then people will do
the development. It all comes down to profit.

Out of interest, is there any PS2 owners here that don't own an Xbox but
are going out to buy an Xbox 360 and definetly won't buy a PS3?

Sorry.....I've been rambling.

As you said, I've got a PS2 and an Xbox and I'll be getting both
next-gen systems. I just can't pass up next-gen offerings from the
Ico/Shadow of the Colossus developer.
