Author To old?
Joerg Jaeger

Hi,
just curious. At 40 years i wonder, if there any other players who
still spend time on a console to actually beat a game.
I know, there was somewhere a 70 year old. So i am guessing, i am not
to old ... haha

Think about it.
There are developers that are in their 40's 50's and even 60's.
Not only do they play a game from start to finish they program it.

I have my *cough*fiftieth*cough birthday this year. I am still play
San andreas religiously, and will do so til the new one comes along. I
am also playing Forza but like the gran turismo games I get bored with
the harder races and go back to beginning eventually, but still play
for a lot of time.

I am also within a hairs bredth of finishing true crime, I think. :O)

Not too old.
I am 33 and I expect I will be gaming until I am 93... or at least until my
hands and eyes die :-)

Right now, it seems laughable to picture an elderly person playing
videogames, but that's because people who are in their 80's and 90's
right now were already 50-60 years old when videogames were invented.
My grandparents, for example, have never owned a computer or played
videogames. But it doesn't seem odd to picture them watching
television or seeing a movie or listening tot he radio, because that's
the type of entertainment they grew up with.

Give it a few decades, however, and it will no longer seem odd. Those
of us who grew up playing games (I'm 39) and are still playing them
will continue to do so as long as we are able. The generations who are
younger than us will think nothing of it either.

Only question--will companies recognize the growing "senior gamers"
market and start putting out shuffleboard and bridge games?

HAHA, NO!!! Why would they do such a thing? Those arent things we like.
Because eventually we will be the seniors playing video games. I'm just 27
at the moment. And i tell myself that i will play until i can no longer hold
the controller. I just look forward to the classic compilation of GTA, where
its all on one disc, all with updated graphics, and you play through the
game in sequential order, completely through.

My father loved gadgets and bought the very first pong/rifle shooting
game he saw, way back in the 70s or whatever. He also bought an
amstrad computer or two. Physical and mental exhaustion put paid to
this a few years back but even when he was on oxygen he would always
ask to see peoples systems up and running.

My mother enjoys using the computers at the library but won't have one
in the house cos she hates the noise of the leys clacking :O))

I used to play for hours on end, on all our systems and on the
computers we have had. Now, sadly, I get tired too quickly and I get
problems in my hands, arms and my eyes. I could race in gran turismo 2
or 3, one of those marathon races that lasted at least two hours, get
a little tired but finish the race. Now I play Forza and am lucky if I
can string together 3 to 5 small races. This isn't really my age but
my health. I hardly ever play Gran Turismo anymore as it feels like I
did twelve rounds with Ali when i come off!

This is the thing that stops most of us older gamers... oh, and having
grandkids willing to beat us with a stick rather than allow us to use
our own machines :O)

Who do you think the already existing bridge and mah-jong games are
aimed at? And what about Myst and The Sims? They seem to be aimed at a
middle-aged audience if not a senior one.

Personally, i just wish they would release Half-Life 2 for the PS2.
But i guess, i have to get me a new pc.
Besides, i still could hang on for a game hours long. The only problem
i get, if it get fastpaste with the controller.
Oh and i can't sit the long anymore eighter. Need a new chair (or
better sofa).

I hate trying to get used to controls for a game which I use on
another system, or the controls in similar games which are slightly
different. GTA/True Crime/Driv3r/Getaway etc, all similar and all just
that tiny bit different so you spend five minutes trying to decide
which button is shoot while you're getting killed

Reminds me of a Japanese animated feature I saw called 'Roujin Z', which
is a sort of a comical near-future look at Japan's ever growing elderly
population. In one scene, they show a nursing home, where one ward is
dedicated to aged hackers. So you have this group of eldery gentlemen
wearing cyber-gear, and still hacking into government and military sites...

What about those cellphone ads with the old people speaking like
youngsters? Sort of odd seeing someone's grandmother holding up a phone
yelling "Where you at?"

My guess is that there'll be a huge demand for card games, dominoes, etc.
that can be played online, with invitation-only rooms, voice chat, and
shared blog (to post pictures of the grandkids).

No Way. I don't play those kind of games now (aged 44), so why would I
want to play them when I'm 70? Mind you, I reckon you were kidding,
right?

Because you'll be too feeble and senile to play anything else? ;-)

At least some people admit, that they are playing.
Cause, nobody in my family does. I only have some colleges at my job,
but there are even younger.

I'll bloody hope that doesn't happen. I'd rather be a crap video game
