I'm sure this problem has been talked about many times before in here but
just last week, my PS2 began making grinding noises whenever I tried putting
in ANY game or dvd. It never gets past the "browser" screen. The question
is, what the hell can I do about it -short of taking it in for service ? I
tried taking off the cover but I didn't know what the hell I was looking at
when I did. Nothing looked out of place in there but I didn't bother taking
out the little screws that secure the cover for what I think is the disc
drive. Should I attempt to take that apart and look at and clean the "eye" ?
Or am I wasting my time and is my PS2 fukt ? FYI, I believe I bought the
thing about 3 years ago if that means anything.

you can try, it is indeed the cover for the drive, but do take care.
I've seen a couple of people reporting machines refusing to work after
this. Mine seemed a little better but it just couldn't take San
Andreas so I gave in and replaced it. It seems to be happening a lot
recently
