Just watching Gamer TV and saw a demo of Ridge Racers on PSP. I knew the
graphics for PSP would be great, but I did not realise they would be that
good. Unless they glossed up the film specially for TV, those graphics look
almost on a par with ps2 graphics.
Here is hoping the UK price for the handheld is not too much. Most
definitely interested in getting one now.

Well Sony did state from the begining that the PSP would have graphics
on par with PS2 but I didn't believe it.

They showed 3 different games - Ridge Racers, Golf game (cant remember the
title) and another game which was a puzzler. They all looked fantastic.
Inparticular, Ridge Racers just looked brilliant. I am not surprised the
battery life is going to be a tad short with the processing power going on
in that machine.

Nope, it's actually better looking when you have it in front of you.

Did they show Lumines? All 3 are amazing.

Amazon have them listed at £170 but say the price could change. Simply Games
(I think) say it won't cost more than £170.

With the DS pricepoint now officially £99 it will be interesting to see how
they fare against each other. I want both but cannot afford both so I will
save up and get the PSP first. Although at the moment I am not impressed
with their list of launch titles.

I'm not really interested in the DS but having read about the PSP in a PS2
magazine and seen some screenshots online I think I'll be getting one ;)
On Special Reserve's website there's an option to leave your email address
so they can let you know when they are taking pre-orders. I've left mine in
case they are cheaper than Amazon!

I got mine yesterday, but it's busted. I'll have to wait months before
it'll get back.

There is one store in Amsterdam, Holland that is already selling them. I see
little use in it though, because it's priced at EUR 499,- and they don't
have games yet ;) The text says the first games will be availabe after 60
days.

Hot Shots
Lumines (one of the best games I've played in a long time)
Ridge Racers
Metal Gear Ac!d

Other people have commented on some of the other games like the Vampire
fighting game thing, but I haven't played it. The US/Euro release list looks
amazing as well.

I am trying to find information about Splinter cell for psp. Gameplay.co.uk
have it listed for launch release, but I cannot find any screenshots, or
trailers, nothing. Have you seen any about?

Is metal gear acid a card battle game ? I remember seeing something about

Yep, it is. I haven't played it because my Japanese isn't good enough.
Apparently they're adding a multiplayer mode for the US release, so it's a
good thing I waited.

People are already using Xbox connect to play other PSP owners around the
world in Ridge Racers and Hot Shots golf.

None other than the fact that it takes place in Liberty City, it isn't a
port of GTA3, and that it's scheduled to come out around the launch of the
US PSP. That's all Rockstar has said.

hmm don't want to fork out for wireless as I don't need it. No worries, I
don't need it online anyway, just a thought.
Does the psp use memory sticks for savegames?

The PSP uses Pro Duo mem carts. The one I bought for 58 bucks is a 512 meg
card. They also sell gig carts, 32 meg, 16 meg etc. Game saves go on them as
well as mp3s, movies, jpegs, and Sony will be offering game downloads soon.
I was also able to connect wirelessly to Sony's servers to check for PSP
firmware upgrades (currently wasn't one available). There's a USB connector
to connect your PSP to your PC so that you can download stuff that way as
well. People exchange game saves etc

Tiger Woods Golf and ATV Fury will be good starters for me on the PSP.
Plus, there are already tutorials and free utilities for putting your
own movies on memory sticks. Everybody that has made their own movies
for the PSP say they look fantastic. Now, the problem will be getting
one. Over 800,000 sold in Japan so far and none on the shelves there.
Sony says they are ramping up to 2 million for US launch but every
vendor has been told not to take preorders yet. Post here if there is
any news about any US vendor taking preorders. There was a corrupted
leaked flash upgrade for a web browser, email, pda function expansion,
off a Sony site and they aren't denying expansions for it. There is a
rumor of a small folding keyboard adapter which might be shown by
mid-year and a rumor of a cell phone capability which Sony is also not
denying, but not acknowledging either.

That's what kind of puts me off about the PSP. All of the first
generation PSP games have LAN play but no online play.

So you have to use things like tunneling software to do it.

If games were properly designed for online, you'd probably have better
communications with people on the other end, like text chat or even
voice chat.

EA has all this online infrastructure and yet all their PSP games are
one-to-one LAN games.

Tad short?

It sounds about on par with most laptops so it's not bad if that's what
you're used to. I suppose if you're used to playing Gameboy for days or
weeks on one set of batteries, it's bad.

I was going to mostly use it at home, since I don't have a long commute
or anything.

But Sony has talked about some far out stuff. Like having an accessory
to turn it into a cell phone and having a web browser and other web
software for it. With that big screen, it would be better than most
wireless PDAs or cell phones for accessing the web.

They've also talked about connecting to PCs or PS3 which would process
some of the code and how you might access your computer or console back
home from a Wifi Hotspot on the road.

These are all cool things but this is where the short battery life would
limit the utility of these features. Oh well, Sony doesn't mind selling
you extra battery packs. ;)

Maybe some third parties will come out with cheaper but higher-capacity
batteries, like they do for digital cameras.

I get about 8 hours of battery life out of games. Longer if I use it to
watch videos off my mem cart or play MP3s with the screen off.

Tests I have seen on the internet show the life ranging from 4-8 hours
depending on what is used.
I was really basing the 'tad short' on the lower end. I think with a little
effort they could have got the battery life a wee bit higher up to about
12-15 hours. But then in true honesty, is anyone really going to want to
play a game or music for that time? It would not bother me to get a spare
battery pack (unless they were expensive). I suppose the only real people
who have a gripe about the battery life are those that go on regualr long
trips.
At the end of the day I would rather have a shorter battery life with much
more features. I am not into music, but the image playback for cameras
would be extremely useful to me. Now if only they could invent an adaptor
so the device could read smartmedia and fujifilm cards.

I am in the UK and have pre-ordered mine. I don't have to get the PSP on
release day, but I think I really should because I do not want the
possibility of having to wait months on end for new stocks to arrive.
I guess I ought to buy myself a memory stick in preparation. Still got a
few months to release, but its the sort of thing I will forget to buy if I
leave it nearer the time and then I won't have enough money! :-)

....and Medievel, that game looks sweet. I guess if you like the first one(s)
on the PS1 that is, I know I'm looking forward to this game along with the
others you already mentioned.

I would agree, while I don't mind the action-rpg's like Xmen Legends or
Bard's Tale/Balders Gate I simply can't stand the card battle games, ugh.
And regular RPG's (where you choose an action and wait your turn to complete
the action) simply put me to sleep.

On top of that the upgrade he is talking about is from the guys that
"hacked" the server and got a premature update. The official ones are
always tested.

Yeah, heh, as soon as you mention it, there it is:

http://www.gamestop.com/productmerch.asp?groupid=196

The Gamestop bundles don't look too bad, at least they give an idea of
what the accessories are and a car charger is there already. There are
cases but there is already a clamshell hard cover lid available also,
which isn't too hard to see being a keyboard at some time. USB port
interface also hints at USB Flash Drive capability.

Some launch games (there are more), notice almost all of them have
Head-to-Head and Multiplayer in their menu -- wireless:

The action ones are not nearly as bad as the others, but I still don't
care for them really. Few, and I do mean few games that are like that
that I have actually enjoyed at all.
