Author FF6 slow as hell?

Is it just me, or is Final Fantasy VI really, really, really slow? It is
nowhere near as fast as the SNES version.

Is this a PS2 problem? (Does it play better on a PSOne?)

It was slow for me, too. I think they're emulating the SNES.

It is pretty slow because it has to load the menus from the disc as
opposed to the cartridge, which is faster. The PS1 didn't have enough
memory to load the whole game all at once.

The PS2 has some options that can enhance PS1 games slightly by allowing
the drive to spin faster than what the PS1 did. This will shorten the
load times in the game. However, you have to reset this option every time
you turn on the PS2. I don't remember exactly where in the menu system
the option is, but if you look in your manual for information about PS1
compatibility, it'll describe how to turn this option on. It doesn't work
with every PS1 game, which is why it defaults to "off".

Turn on the console with no disc in, or the drive ejected. Press Triangle on
the screen with two options (browser and settings) and then move down to
somethingI think was called "Playstation Driver". There you'll have the
texture smoothing options and the 2x disc speed. Thats how it worked on my
PS2 anyway. Could be different for more recent builds of the console.

Anyway, regarding the disc speed thing. It works usually, but its not always
particulary stable. Your games are more likely to lock up or load things
incorrectly. The texture smoothing is cool though, although its gonna be
pretty useless for FFVI (or FFVII even).

Personally, I can't be bothered much with the FF ports. They're great games
of course, but they're not ported in a way that makes it any better than the
original, nor are the special features all that useful either. It's usually
a lot less painless to play them in emulation on zsnes.

That's mostly true, except for FF1, which had a few good options, like no
more INEFFECTIVE! by default and much-improved graphics.

I wasn't even talking about the menus (which are slow too)...just the
battle sequences are excrutiating! The players walk slowly, attack
slowly, etc.

I fired up the zsnes emulator and compared it to the SNES ROM. Much better!
