I just bought a sound system and an opitical cable for my PS2 and I was
wondering:

Do RCA and optical cable have to be plugged in to get surround sound?

Are there particular games that feature surround sound?

Well, if you've got a sound system that features Dolby ProLogic, you can get
simulated surround sound with RCA cables, but to get true surround sound you
have to use an optical cable exclusively and have that option turned on in
the PS2 options menu.

Well, there are no PS2 games that feature strictly Dolby 5.1 surround sound
other than during cutscenes. But there are games that feature Dolby 5.1 DTS
surround sound (which is true surround sound) during actual gameplay, two of
them being, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and SSX: Tricky. There may be
others, I'm not sure.

Should I disconnect the two sound RCA cables and just use the optical cable?
I'm trying to tell if there is a difference between the two cables.

Yes... disconnect the RCA cables, because if the game, or source (if you're
playing a DVD movie) doesn't support 5.1, the optical cable will provide the
same audio that the RCA cables would.

Again, make sure to go into the PS2's options and select the optical cable
option... I forget what it's called exactly in the options... I think it's
the TOSlink, but if I'm wrong, I hope someone here will correct me.

Dobly ProLogic (II in the PS2's case), is real surround sound, not any more
"simulated" than surround sound from five speakers trying to simulate a
sound from a point not in the same spot as one of those speakers. ProLogic
I has at the very least three channels. If ProLogic isn't real surround
sound, then 5.1 isn't either since there's 6.1, and 6.1 because there's 7.1,
etc.

DTS isn't Dolby.

The facts are that you don't need the optical out connected unless you're
playing something that uses DTS for the surround sound. Otherwise, ProLogic
II just needs the RCA's hooked up and a receiver that can demux the signal.

You don't have to, but if your receiver is getting the optical signal, the
RCA's probably aren't being used, no?
