Some of their predictions are kinda crazy... Sony catching up to the Xbox
360 because of Europe and Japan? Have they not seen the price that the PS3
will debut at in Europe? Add to that it'll lack the hype it had at the
North American and Japanese launches because it's already known that the Wii
is kicking it's XXX and the Xbox 360 simply has better titles and a very
strong release schedule this year. If MGS4 gets delayed like they're also
predicting, what will move the millions of expensive consoles and compete
with the likes of Halo 3?
As for buying a string of studios, with plummiting profits can Sony really
pull it off? I'm kinda worried about Microsoft ever since they revised
their numbers and are talking about changing things in order to be more
profitable (sounds like they'll be throwing around a lot less money), but if
Sony does start buying developers Microsoft will have to do something if
they want to remain competitive. Something like throwing out enough money
to make Grand Theft Auto IV and Resident Evil 5 exclusives would do the
trick.

It could mean they're also working on the 360 version. Besides, maybe Konami
doesn't want to compete with Halo 3? Keep in mind:
Konami is NOT Sony.

True, but this news isn't good for Sony and they desperately need it. If
MGS4 is pushed back until 2008, that is two successive Christmas shopping
seasons that Sony's going to lose to Microsoft. They'll also lose this
upcoming season to the Wii. What's left for Sony, FF?

I think that boat sailed when they pushed their Europe release to March and
forced them to spend the equivalent of $835.

FF XIII and FF XIII Versus (whatever that is) have both been pushed to
2008 as well.
At this rate, it really looks like 2008 is going to be when it could be
worth picking up a PS3.
What's Sony, and more importantly, any PS3 developers, to do in the
meantime? If I were a publisher that was basing my quarterly predictions
in part on revenue from the PS3, I'd be wondering if it was time to redo
my plans for 2007 at this point.

At this point, if Sony were to buy up studios, it'd basically be a bribe
to keep them from releasing titles for the Wii or 360.
Microsoft doesn't have to buy anyone at this point. They can simply say
"Hi. The 360 has 10x the install base - and growing - of the PS3."
At that point, who'd want to develop exclusive titles for the PS3?
Based on some of the ancedotal figures tossed around here - like game
studios claiming develoment costs are edging towards $20mil per title, or
claims that they need to sell 500k copies just to break even, Sony would
have to guarantee at least ONE of those - but would it be enough?
