| this new controller has got me thinking... i think nintendo are on the
verge of changing forever...
the big N cannot compete with microsoft or sony's financial might, so
instead of fight a losing battle they are choosing to walk their own
path, something they have been saying for a long time, however until
the PS and the Xbox stop playing games they will always be
comparasons...
unless nintendo specialize in certain kinds of games, instead of it
being a traditional games console, it becomes, for instance, a party
games console...
yes all three consoles still play games, but the revolution games are
likely to be designed for the revolution only - i cannot see many
developers making cross platform games for all 3 consoles as they would
have to completely rethink how the game plays on the revolution
controller - so the games that do get released on the revolution will
mostly be exclusives...
doesnt sounds too different to the gamecube to me... except that the
gaming experience will be unique on the revolution - currently the GC /
Xbox / PS2 all use traditional controllers, and althought the games are
different the method of control is similar, button bashing and control
stick twiddling...
with this new controller whole new skills are going to have to be
learnt, giving a totally different gaming experience to what we have
seen before...
will this be enough to save the revolution?
totally depends on 3rd party support in my mind - i know nintendo will
release some great games that utilize this new controller in brilliant
ways, but i also know nintendo will keep their famous franchises -
mario et al... what the revolution needs is a handful of 3rd party
games which are released very early on in its life cycle, games which
are great, appealing and use the new controller well...
delaying the twilight princess for the launch, and making metroid 3 a
launch title will help loads too...
hi to the froup btw, now im going to disappear back into teh mists of
the real...

I haven't had the chance to read into the details regarding the Revolution
controller, but from I have seen and skimmed over I can say that I'm looking
forward to using it. Certaintly, new approaches, as long as they are
intuitive, should be welcomed. I'm all about simplicity and seamless
integration, done well.
However, even if it does prove intuitive, I doubt I will boxing away the
Wavebird though. (Revolution will also have ports for GC controllers?) Call
it laziness, but I really don't see myself using this new controller all the
time -- no matter how intuitive it proves to be. Laying on the couch with a
standard controller, requiring no movement except for thumbs, still has it's
appeal.
I see there is an expansion port on this controller, which should open the
door for other interesting ideas as well. I don't know what the
demographics are for people who frequently play not only on their consoles
but others' consoles as well, but one of things that I always wanted to see
expanded on (since the Dreamcast) is the use of memory in controllers.
Going beyond the Dreamcast VMU's, such memory could be used for profiles.
In range of another console running [game], simply pull out your controller
(wireless, of course) and you are ready to go (proving you also own that
game and have a stored profile for it on the controller). Multiplayer game?
Just turn on your controller and hop in. Going even further, your online
profile(s) could be stored in the controller as well -- and if the console
you are "visiting" is networked, you could have access to all your personal
game saves if they are stored online. Most efficient approach would be for
the saves to come from your own hardware (like a PC at home), but Nintendo
wanting simplicity (i.e., not requiring users to enter IP addresses) could
very easily put together an online storage bank similiar to "Action Replay".
This could also be coupled with their plan to sell the retro stuff online.
After purchasing SMB, Contra, Mario64 (or whatever), it could be stored in
your online space -- making it available from any networked Revolution
console. It would be mapped to the controller, not console.
Right now, though, my main hope and dream is to see some games on the DS
talk standard TCP/IP over 802.11. Come on, Nintendo, you put together some
cool tools -- now lets start integrating it all together. I don't want to
stand in a circle with others, multiplaying on the DS, using your
propriertary "WLAN". Hell, I don't even know anyone else with a DS. I want
to simply pull out my DS, while in range of an AP (mine or public), and be
able to multiplay against someone on another continent. Also, any third
parties listening? Nintendo isn't going to do this, but how about a simple
web browser and email client for the DS? The DS needed both, yesterday.
The DS is begging for these applications. Two LCD's, one being a touch
screen, simplicity in design, built in 802.11b (albeit, 2 Mbs, but that'll
work), and no applications like this yet? Give me these applications and my
two $600 PDA's will be listed on Ebay the next day.
Cheers,
Eric

I'd like to see what could be done with FPS type games. I like playing them
on consoles, but the standard controller is way too slow compared to the
keyboard and mouse.

Jimmery! How the bloody hell are you? The new controller's....interesting.
They had an interview with Iwata on the G4 network here in the states and
he talked about it and I must say I'm intrigued. They had Metroid Prime 2
running with it and the idea of looking around just by point and moving one
ond of the thing while moving with the stick section seemed kind of cool. I
think they're going for for, and I hate using the term since it's used way
too often, innovating the way you can actually play a game. One thing that
I thought was pretty cool was that if you turn the main part sideways it's
basically an NES controller...should make all those downloadable NES games
easy to play. They're definitely marching to the beat of their own drummer.

I think most multiplatform games can work well with the new controller and
you know Nintendo will be the company producing games that really take
advantage of the thing. Other developers may (hopefully) take those ideas
for use and run with them. I'd say they're definitely going for the usually
non-gaming types as well as those of us who already play games.

Yeah, that's one thing that has me concerned. Developers maybe going "Wait,
this isn't the standard two thumbstick multi-button controller so we can't
possibly do a Revolution version. Although the motion sensor doesn most of
what the right stick does in a lot of games anyway.

You hit the nail on the head. It's definitely going to come down to
convincing 3rd party developers that the conroller is similar enough in
function...though much different in design to effectively play their games.
Nintendo's core audience will probably love it....I know I was skeptical
about it until I got to thinking about how much more connected I could feel
with a game by controlling it with the new controller. It'll definitely up
the immersion factor and I think if people are willing to give it a chance
and they can come out with a few titles at launch that really show off the
things potential than they'll probably be ok.

They're not doing that. Well at least with Twilight Princess. Iwata said
despite rumors that Zelda was being delayed for the Revolution he wouldn't
go back on the promise that was made to GameCube owners that it would come
out for that system. I saw the interview and I thought that was really cool
of him to do that. Now Metroid 3 and a Mario launch title....that would be
aces.

No disappearing dammit! It's nice to see a familiar face on here again.
