I've looked at the new Zelda details on the net and I'm really looking
forward to getting a copy. I know it's not out until October but I
wonder if anyone has any comments about it that we could discuss. This
is my first posting to this newsgroup.

I hate to tell you, but this group is pretty dead these days. I'd love to
see a Zelda thread get going, but I bet it withers and dies pretty fast.
The only threads that seem to thrive are troll threads and the occasional
arguement.

I have a site, and we just put up a message board. At the moment, it's even
deader than this group, but I did just start a Zelda thread there. You can
join in on that if you like (I'm also pasting it below, we'll see if anyone
cares). I'd also recommend the forums at the major game sites.

My site is: www.gameswelike.com

As I'm sure anyone can tell from the site, I'm a huge Zelda fan. And the
next Zelda game is due out in mere months from now, a game I've been waiting
for since 2000 (before Nintendo pulled the bait-and-switch on us with Wind
Waker).

I'm really excited about the additions and modifications I've seen already
in Twilight Princess. I'm talking about things like:

Combat refinements--the ability to hit with your shield, two-handed sword
strikes, destructable shields and weapons on enemies, etc.

Animal control--so far we've seen some teaser bits with cats and Link's
hawk, and his horse, of course.

The Twilight Realm / Link as a wolf--the big change and attention catcher.
Wind Waker was missing an "alternate world", and that hurt. So it's back!
Link looks cool as a wolf, although the "Twilight Princess", Midna, is
weird, and so's her hat.

New items--the Gale Boomerang is only the start, I'll wager. Nintendo has
changed the item interface specifically to keep the number of items a secret
as you play through the game. That's cool! I'm surprised at how much
information they've let out already, and it only hints at greater surprises
in store.

So, who else is excited? I'd like to hear everyone's wish lists. What do you
want to see in the game? I'll start it off: I simply want skippable text! It
looks like they've got everything else I might wish for covered pretty well,
but even after playing the E3 demo, I couldn't tell for sure if we're going
to get stuck reading "You got an item. Even though this is the 50th time
you've got this item, you have to read how to use it again, and the text
will scroll by slowly even though you're mashing the A button.
Congratulations!". That's all I want--off the top of my head, at least.

What I want is more of the feel of the original Zelda with it's
somewhat non-linear feel to the story. Link to the Past and Ocarina
of Time were also nice in this respect. I know a lot of people like
Majora's Mask, but I didn't. Going around collecting all those stupid
mask just got tedious. I'm big into adventure games, but it was
missing something; the story didn't 'build' like other Zeldas.

So, The whole light/dark world of Link to the Past would be brilliant,
and certainly a non-linear feel to the game overall. Once a game puts
me on rails, I'm done with it.

Also, make it more difficult! The original Zelda had me tracing up
and down that stupid map looking for things. It was not as obvious as
say Wind Waker as to what the next steps were. WW was far too easy.

Yeah, Wind Waker was way too weasy. I mean, easy. :-)
You don't have to worry about linearity; the only Zelda game that's linear
is Four Swords. I'm sure it'll be like every other Zelda game, where there
are items you must acquire before you can access certain areas, etc, but
aside from that, everything is up to you. I assume they'll have an in-game
function to say "Hey! You should go to the Lava Flow next", but as always,
you can ignore it and do as you please.
I agree about Majora's Mask. The game had more emphasis on the side quests
than the main game. It's not that I minded getting all the masks--I enjoyed
it--it's that for the most part, they were useless.

#1 Please do NOT make this with cell shading.
#2 I'm ALL for skipping all the frustrating repeat text.
#3 Maybe some hints about what to do in the game so I dont have to
spend 20 bucks buying a walkthrough guide.
#4 Include a memory card with the game so I dont have to spend another
20 bucks just to save.
#5 Instead of written text, how about some speaking parts?

I would like to see a variety of different moves that Link can perform
in Twilight Princess.
In Wind Waker there were more combos with Link's sword than in OoT or
MM, but there still needs to be more depth in the fighting. I would
also like some battles where Link has 1 or 2 allies.

Well, I know that the adventure itself is about 2-3 times bigger than
OoT so thats a lot of play time.

Thanks very much for replying. I live in a place where I don't get much
chance to talk to people about Gamecube, so this is great for me. Maybe
we can breathe some more life into the group!

I went to your site and I think it's absolutely fantastic. I love the
screenshots and humour.

Could you tell me how two-handed swordstrikes might work?

You're in luck! From what I've seen so far, the battle system is being
refined again. Link can hit enemies with his shield, not just his sword--in
fact, he doesn't even have to have his sword out to do that. In the part I
saw, he was carrying a lantern so that he could see, and whacking bats with
his shield. When he put the lantern away to get his sword out, it was too
dark to see and fight.
I've also seen Link do a two-handed sword strike, gripping the sword with
both hands while letting his shield hang on his right arm. That two-handed
strike was the start of a combo, too, 'cause he finished off by swirling
around to the left, letting go of his sword with his right hand, and doing a
large sweep with the sword with his left.

I haven't seen anything to indicate battles with allies, other than the
parts where he's a wold and Midna is riding him, casting spells (or
whatever) with her weird hat thing.

I'm just guessing--I didn't do any in the demo I played at E3. But it's
probably a directional press on the analog stick while locked on to an
enemy. For example, you still do a straight thrust when you press up and A
while locked on. A two-handed strike might be down and A, or maybe up, down
and A. Or it could be the second hit in a combo.

#1. You got it. Haven't you seen screenshots or anything? It's done in
the art style of Ocarina of Time, but with up-to-date graphics that look
great!

#2. I hope so, too.

#3. I'm sure there will be some in-game hint system, but if not (or if it's
not enough), remember www.gamefaqs.com. Lots of walkthroughs there, all
free, and there will surely be one up within days of the game's release.

#4. I doubt that one. They do that in Japan sometimes, along with
game-specific stickers, but never anywhere else.

#5. I'm afraid they've spoken on that--no voice parts, just little voice
clips here and there, like "help!" or "hey!".

Per Sandman's message:

#1...they are not doing that
#2...Repeat text? like telling how to do things 1242354 times (like in
FFVII where they tell you what the save point does EVERYTIME to step on
one.
#3...how about actually navigating the game instead of using cheat
guides...also why would you bother paying for one. if you want to know
how to do something www.gamefaqs.com
#4...Seriously? do you expect them to give you a memory card? buy a 256
(or whatever that biggest slot card is) and you will never need another
card.
#5...would you really want to hear Link's voice? that would ruin part
of the fantasy of the game. The thing about saga's like this game are
the way you portray the character in your head. I am VERY glad they are
not going with voice acting

Per someone else's (sorry forgot the name already) Message:

It's not that I minded getting all the masks--I enjoyed
it--it's that for the most part, they were useless

I can say I enjoyed getting most of them...I don't anyone who ACTUALLY
enjoyed getting the 3 masks you get from the Anju and kefka side
quest...that was ungodly annoying. But the reward for getting them all,
was FREAKING awesome...better than taking the time to breed chocobos
and get Knights of the round from FFVII or getting the uppercut in
MegamanX 2

October? Of this year? Wow, I thought it'd be out in 2006.

Actually, Nintendo hasn't set a firm date yet, but they've said it will
definitely be out this year, in all territories. They're not afraid to
delay stuff, though, so we'll see. I'm guessing it'll be a November 15th
release for the US. Nintendo seems to like that date--"release day" (which
is Tuesdays at the moment) of the week of Thanksgiving. They've released a
major game every year on that date, and the Gamecube launched then too.
Last year was Metroid Prime 2, year before was Mario Kart, and Metroid Prime
1 in 2002.

GOOD.. I was very disappointed with the cell shading.. Me and 10,000,000
other people as well.

You got the idea.. And telling you what an item is for and how to use it
every single time when it's an item you use 10,000 times.

Because sometimes a person gets lost, or has no idea how to defeat a
certain boss.. Also, believe it or not, some people do not have internet
access.

I think for any game that cost more than $40, you should be able to save
your place without them purposely forcing you to have to buy additional
equipment.

I probably will, but don't believe that I should be forced to have to.

Just think its industry standard now that most games have speaking
characters

Dude, if you own a gamecube, why don't you have a big memorycard already?
EVERY system requires you to buy your own freaking memory cards. The only
game that didn't was Animal Crossing.

I have a 1010blocks memory card.
A lot of space huh.
