EGM's Hot Ten! A comparison.
|
|
| Fred Liken 2005-06-16, 8:32 pm |
| Number one game, Zelda Game Cube.
Number of Nintendo exclusives on hot ten, 5.
Number of Sony exclusives on hot ten, 4
Number of XBox exclusives on hot ten, 0
Number of DS games on hot ten, 4 (could be three, I forgot)
Number of PSP games on hot ten, 0.
Number of Windows Mobile games on hot ten, 0.
And people don't think Nintendo has heat? Why the disconnect between the
rantings in the Usenet and reality?
| |
|
| Yeah, and EGM making a list is an authoritive measure in what regard,
again? It may be better than an amazon.com favorite list, but beyond
that, it's just a list that is inherently subjective. It's like IGNs
game of the month, you may agree with it or you may not.

The Usenet is a better indicator of the future rather than the present.

These are the games that haven't come out yet that people voted for. It's
the future.

I find it funny that Nintendo took the port that does progressive scan
off newer gamecubes (apparently to cut production costs) yet still
releases games with that feature. Is there some kind of seperate
adapter that you hook to the regular av-out that does progressive scan
now?

Why wouldn't they? PS2 games were still released with support for the
HDD after the slim PS2 came out (which cannot use the HDD). Sega of
America never released a first party VGA adapter in North America for
the DC but close to if not all first party games supported VGA output,
Sega specifically locked out support for the official Sega of Japan
lightgun from most of the first party gun games on the DC, but left in
support for third party guns. Nintendo released N64 games long after
they stopped shipping new N64s. Software support for hardware almost
always extends beyond the production of the hardware itself.

I dont think its such a silly idea. Most people do not have HDTV's, at
least in Europe. they are to much to spend for your average
person/household. I dont think HDTV will be common untill close or even
into the next generation of consoles after Revolution, 360 and PS3.

It's not necessarily "reality" as you say, as this is only a tabulation
of votes taken from readers at the 1up.com web site. The voting can be
done here for those interested:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=709401099643
The wording on the page reads "Tell us what upcoming video games you
want to read about the most". There is only four Xbox exclusives to
choose from, with the GC having 15 and the PS2 having 30. There is
also only 8 PSP games to choose from versus 16 DS games.

You're exactly right, and I think the word you're looking for is
"opinion." If only a fraction of usenet posters would read and
understand the defintion of that word...

The reason for my reply was simply what you stated. Fred made it appear
as if the opinions of usenet posters are in contrast to reality, where
his post was supposed to be a measure of reality, though it is also
just another opinion.

Um, but your problem is that you don't realize that we aren't talking about
single opinions, but rather a survey of opinions. You can have your own
opinion, but when you ask a bunch of people what their opinions are, you get
a total. That total is no longer in the realm of opinion, but a fact about
what people's opinions are. Lost? Of course, you were lost before this
post, obviously, since your reply was so clueless.
Now, if Usenet says that "EVERYONE LIKES PSP AND HATES DS" then that is a
statement about the aggregation of people's opinions. A statement about a
fact that can be verified.
If the data doesn't support the statement, then it is not in tune with
reality.
No need to thank me in clearing this up for you. I know you have a hard
time with these abstract ideas, etc.
Please don't knee-jerk off a response.

So this "data" you mention is from a survey? An internet survery? Wow,
very impressive.
I also like your algebra these days...single opinion + single opinion =
total (mysterious stuff not in realm of opinions anymore). Just as one
apple is just an apple but three apples equals....3 oranges? Not sure,
but I am sure you can clear it up for us, Fred, even if just for the
sake that you can't stand to lose.
What makes a bunch of opinions better than your opinion, or my opinion,
or my cat's opinion? They are still opinions you can agree or disagree
with and hence worth as much as any post on usenet is. That is, in my
opinion. ;)

It's simple statistics, not algebra, my ignorant friend. It's the central
limit theory. Read about it.

Yes, if you had a bucket of fruit and wanted to know what the ration of
fruit is, you would pick them and count them up, how many apples, how many
oranges, etc. Then you would know which you had the most of. If it was
totally random, you wouldn't even have to count all of the fruit to have a
good idea of what the ratio was within a margin of certainty. It's all very
simple stuff, my ignorant friend! EXCITING I TELL YOU!
quote:
> What makes a bunch of opinions better than your opinion, or my opinion,

Because having a "bunch of opinions" can tell you what a random person's
opinion is likely to be. If I wanted to sell, say, for the sake of argument
let's pick something totally random... like... say... a portable game
system, I'd like to collect a bunch of people's opinions to see what the
average take on my system would be. It's simple statistics. You're making
an XXX of yourself by even arguing it. Typical.

Looks like Freddy hasn't taken his medicine today. He's on fire! I bet

In any case, I will let you go with the words of Winston Churchill, who

An internet survey, Fred, how little do you have up your selve? Did you
consult Merriam Webster again? Central limit theory my booty! Go to the

You honestly think that you've made a case that requires someone to save

Tsk tsk tsk... don't toss around the word moron unless you want to get

You said that EGM was talking out of their asses, which was wrong, it was
RANDOM PEOPLE that responded to the survey that did the talking, not EGM.
EGM just published the results.
You, sir, should reserve the term moron for those that deserve it, moron.

Hey Fred...maybe if we take a survey in this thread and use CLT we can
find out who the average person belives to be clueless? ;)
Btw...if anyone ever tries to stray of topic it is little Freddy, you
know that. Once Fred get's his tail wagged he pulls the Merriam-Webster
out and tries to sound educated while moving away from the topic at
hand by bringing up CLT, etc, talking about a suvery he did not design
and knows nothing about.

While randomization is quite a theory on it's own, even Fred might
realize that having to go to a gaming website on the internet to vote
for your favorite game can hardly be called random. Further, in most
random surverys the subjects would only be consulted once, while on
most internet surverys I can go and submit and submit and submit. I
doubt EGM would go to the lengths to block IPs after voting. That's why
Gallup polls are still conducted in a different manner than using
internet surverys.

You're confusing the topic to try to keep your ingorance obfuscated. Won't
work.
It's a random selection of people that are interested in video games. Those
are the people there.

I find it hard to believe that so few people actually have a TV with HDTV
support - I have had mine FIVE years. Yes, when I got it I saw it as an
'early adopter' feature but I have been watching hidef broadcasts on cable
for the last 2 years and have enjoyed the few games supporting 1080i on
Xbox...don't think there were any on the cube that I own. I do work in a
fairly 'high tech' position but I had no idea how few people in the general
public had HDTVs when about about 50% of the folks I work with have HDTV and
all but one are gamers who play on their HDTV.
Seriously, HDTV in the US is not very expensive unless you are comparing to
the cut rate generic TVs...the price of a decent TV with and without HDTV is
very close. The one thing you may not get though is 720P support - only 480P
and 1080i...those sets with 720P do cost significantly more.
My HDTV has only 480P and 1080i..720P was pretty much cutting edge when I
got my TV ( Sony KP HS5310 ) back in June of 2000. My TV is also a 4x3
format which I wanted due to the lack of programming available at the time
in widescreen and I think it was the perfect choice as standard TV looks
great and when I watch hidef in widescreen the bars are so black they do not
bother me. I am trying to make it last another year or two until a
widescreen TV makes more sense.
