Chinese gamer murdered in MMORPG dispute
|
|
| Mr. Hams 2005-06-09, 12:30 am |
| Recently, in Shanghai, China, Qui Chengwei stabbed Zhu Caoyuan in the
chest, killing him.
But what was his motive? Apparently, Qui had loaned Zhu his leveled-up
sword in the MMORPG Legend of Mir III. Then Zhu accidentally sold it to
a random bidder.
Qui, furious, confronted the police, but they had no authority over
virtual swords. Zhu offered to pay all the money he got from the sword
to Qui, but Qui refused the offer.
So what did Qui do? Kill him. Qui now faces 15 to life in jail. A sad
day in gaming history indeed...
Zhu was 26 years old.

He got a suspended _death_ sentence - ie. life in prison.

| Yep, it finally looks like all those "kooky fears" about D&D in the mid 80's
were legit, just ahead of the times.

It should have entered the realm of legitimacy when Law and Order did an
episode on RPG inspired murder 5 or 6 years ago. Whatever Briscoe said was
always the real deal/

Actually, in China the better sentence would've been death.

Actually, really stabbing someone with a real sword is not a vitual
crime.
What the guy who got stabbed did, now that's a virtual crime.

Yes, because one nutjob out of millions of gamers is obviously of
major statistical importance.

It would be an interesting legal point in some countries. Not the
murder, but the ownership of the sword. One could argue that as it has a
monetary value it is a commodity like any other. In that sense it is as
valuable as a real sword - worth whatever someone was prepared to pay
for it. The question would then revolve round the effect of loaning it
to the other person and the rights that gave him to dispose of it. In
some countries, ownership would still be with the orginal person and it
would have to be given back. But loaning someone a virtual item makes it
a really tricky one from a legal point of view, no mattter where the
jurisdiction!
