Pre-E3 2005: Breaking: Revolution Details
Sleek system to play standard DVDs, says Nintendo. More inside.
by Matt Casamassina
May 12, 2005 - The Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005 is still days away,
but that hasn't stopped Microsoft from debuting its Xbox 360 console on MTV.
And now Nintendo has followed suit, revealing some new meaty details about
its next-generation console, codenamed Revolution.
Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan
describes the console as "very, very sleek." The system, which is reportedly
tiny, will stand horizontally. Its width will reportedly be no more than
three DVD cases stacked flatly on each other, or slightly more than an inch.
Revolution will play standard DVD media this time around. No word yet if the
console will be able to play DVD movies.
It will also be able to play high-definition games and go online.
More details to come at E3 2005. Stay tuned.

Bit of a missed opportunity if it is using DVDs but not playing movies.
You just know that if MS and Nintendo only use DVDs that Sony are going
to pounce all over them for it by pointing out how inferior they are.

I did hear it has DVD playback, make of that what you will.

Does it really need DVD playback though? Nintendo's comment about the
Game Cube being for games only did make a certain amount of sense.
Heck, Nintendo could be silly and use mini-HD-DVDs, which would give them
added space, while being more difficult to pirate.
I guess there's no way the Revolution will be backwards compatible with
Game Cube though, if they go with a standard DVD format...

Um, unless they both play in the same shelf-loader... duh...

DVD Playing isn't exactly a selling point anymore, most people have a
standalone DVD now, but didn't when PS2 was released. I doubt many
people bought a PS2 or Xbox to play CDs like they might have partially
bought a PS1/Saturn to.
A good selling point would be if it played BRD or HD-DVD, I'd wager Sony
will definately feature at least one of those formats on PS3. If they
only support one of the two formats, it could spell disaster for the
other one.

If Nintendo are *serious* about being a force in the next-gen console
market, then they'll produce a console that is *capable* of using standard
media but uses copy protection for games.
That gives the ability for DVD playback, maintains some sort of profitable
market for games development, whilst not alienating those with the knowledge
to go to the added trouble and expense of getting a modchip to pirate games.
Argue all you want, since PSX there's never been a leading console that you
can't pirate games. And piracy has never killed a console either.
Not that I'm condoning piracy, it's just a harsh truth.

I disagree; it is a selling point. If the Xbox 360 and PS3 can play DVD's
but the Revolution can't... that isn't a good thing.
Personally, I only have an Xbox attached to my TV, and even though I haven't
played an Xbox game for a while, it still sits there because of the ability
to playback DVD movies.

Just because the PS3 is using one format and not the other? I don't think
so.
It'll be decided when standalone HD-DVD and blu-ray players appear on the
market, the consumer will pick and choose.

From whats been posted on the internet (cant remember where I've seen
it though), there wont be Blu-Ray and HD-DVD as such... more a
combination of the two. I think its Sony's technology with Toshiba's (or
whoever the company is) software/methods of recording/whatever

Recent rumours are that they're back-pedaling though...
I think the original announcement was that they're holding talks to
reach a compromise proposal, and it wouldn't be surprising if both sides
ended up being just too damned pig-headed to compromise enough (well,
"greedy" may be more appropriate -- there's a lot of money to be had in
licensing fees for whoever "wins").

More people have DVD players then have consoles, they have become the VCRs
of the new age. You can't cram in all the technology of a good DVD player
into a game console, and still keep it cheap enough to sell.

You can get an above average DVD player for a little more than $50. Believe
me, the functionality of DVD in a console is just a fraction of that cost.
