Double-edged sword. If the hardware, especially the controllers are
designed specifically with Nintendo titles in mind, they're not as
usable for third-party titles. Hence, one of the reasons Nintendo has
poor 3rd-party support, which limits their installed base, which limits
the potential returns on their first-party games.
Mario just isn't the big factor that it once was. This generation, it
was GTA and other games outsold it as well. Heck even Madden probably
helped sell more systems than Mario or Zelda. That wasn't the case in
the 32-bit era.
