Well, as it's been able to beep through the PC speaker since it's inception,
I guess I'm not talking about a new version.

I had a version of Hack for the commodore Amiga back in the 80s - a
predecessor of Nethack, but not the only one - and that also outputted sound
so you could play the correct tune to gain entry to the Wizard's castle.
